RIFLE CLAIMS TWO CONFERENCE
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Rifle, ranked 16th nationally, claimed championships in smallbore in the Mid-Atlantic
Conference (the other MAC as we refer to it) as well as smallbore
and air rifle in the Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference
(WIRC). Our shooters earned nine All-MAC awards and 13 All-WIRC
selections in smallbore and air rifle combined. Please join us in
congratulating Head Coach Newt Engle and his team!
This was our last season competing in those two leagues as we
recently moved to the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC), which
is considered the premier rifle league in the nation. Six schools
from the GARC qualified for the NCAA Championships last season. We competed in the GARC Championships earlier this
month as well.
TRIVIA NIGHT SET FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 12 AT
JAR
Our third-annual
Trivia Night will be held on Saturday, April 12 at James
A. Rhodes Arena at 6 p.m. There will be plenty to eat and drink
as well as plenty of opportunity to mingle with many of our head
and assistant coaches, and department staff members. This is a fun
team event with trivia in categories such as movies, music, history
and of course sports. It's one of my favorite nights of the year
and I guarantee you will have a good time!
Reservations are filling up, please contact Alexa Doutt with our
Z-Fund at (330) 972-2695 or via E-mail to buy a table or individual
seats.
A BUSY WEEKEND FOR ZIPS ATHLETICS
The Spring sports season is in full gear and six of our
teams will be in action this week, including four here in Akron
...
• Baseball hosts Canisius in a non-conference
game today at 3 at Canal Park in downtown. Due to a burst pipe at
the stadium, concessions will not be available during today's game
and fans are welcome to bring their own food and drink. Also,
portable restrooms will be available. The team resumes its
Mid-American Conference schedule, in which it owns a 5-1 record, at
Miami (Ohio) on Friday through Sunday.
• Softball, which is 2-0 against the MAC, opens a 10-game
homestand at Lee R. Jackson Field with a doubleheader on Friday
against Buffalo starting at 1 p.m., and single games against rival
Kent State on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m.,
respectively. The games against the Flashes will serve as the
latest installment in the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge, which we lead by a
score of 5.5 to 3.5.
• Track and Field hosts the Northeast Ohio Quad versus Kent
State, Youngstown State and Ashland on Friday and Saturday at the
Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex. On Friday, field events
begin at 1 p.m. and running events at 2:45 p.m. Saturday will
feature the shot put and discus competition, starting at 1 p.m.
• Tennis is at home to face MAC opponents Ball State on
Friday and Miami (Ohio) on Saturday. Both at 1 p.m., and likely
indoors at LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow (driving
directions).
• Women's Golf participates in the Eastern Kentucky Colonel
Classic in Richmond, Ky., on Friday and Saturday.
• Men Golf travels to Kannapolis, N.C., for the Irish Creek
Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday.
