GET YOUR TICKETS … AND THINK BIGGER!
Our Men’s Basketball and Women’s Basketball season tickets are on sale, and already we have seen a terrific response on renewals. Please note that renewals are due in just a few weeks (Oct. 5), so don’t delay. New tickets already are on sale as well.
Our goal is to sell out all reserved seating in Rhodes Arena. Soon you’ll be seeing some new basketball advertising with the tagline “Think Bigger”, which is one of Coach Dambrot’s mantras for our program and believing we can take the next step. To do that, we’ll need your help – and attendance at our home games, so please support our student-athletes and coaches by purchasing season tickets.
SPEAKING OF TICKETS …
We have heard from a lot of you especially eager to support our Men’s Soccer program this year, with it being Coach Porter’s final season at UA. So if you missed out on season tickets, here’s a unique way to catch our five remaining regular-season home games: our new Men’s Soccer mini plan. This includes a ticket to all five remaining contests (including Michigan and West Virginia) plus our coveted Akron Soccer scarf (while supplies last). Click here to purchase, and thanks in advance!
HOMECOMING UPCOMING
It was great visiting with alumni from Baseball and Men’s Soccer this past weekend – thanks for returning to campus and continuing to support your school.
We welcome them – and everyone else – back on Saturday, Oct. 6 for our annual campus-wide Homecoming, including our 40th Anniversary of Title IX Celebration that morning. This event is open to the public and all former and current female student-athletes are invited – and will receive two complimentary tickets to the 2 p.m. football game. Doors for the event, on the FirstMerit Foundation Club Level of InfoCision Stadium, open at 10 a.m. with speakers starting at 11 a.m.
Afterward, there is an Alumni Tailgate package, which includes food and a football game ticket starting at just $15. Our Varsity “A” tailgate tent inside the stadium also is available – it is free to Varsity “A” members and just $8 for their guests and non-members.
WOMEN’S SOCCER PARTICIPATES IN BLOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
Our Women’s Soccer Team partnered with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at Sunday’s game vs. Marshall to raise money and awareness for blood cancers. Our team wore red shirts during warm-ups and honored Nathan Stephens and his family as the game's honorary captain. Nathan is a 5-year old Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia survivor.
Nathan is serving as the 2012 Honored Hero for the Light The Night Walk in Akron, held on campus at the Stile Athletics Field House. He will walk on October 14 with his team, Nathan's Ninjas. For more information, visit LLS.org.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES NOTES
The University’s Board of Trustees met today, and I wanted to share two items from the agenda that relate to Zips student-athletes, coaches and facilities:
The Trustees authorized the administration to explore the procurement of solar panels to provide electricity, reduce usage of fossil fuels, and contribute to energy savings and efficiencies. The solar panels, about the size of an acre, would be installed on the south facing roof of the Stile Athletic Field House and would be the largest solar array on a rooftop in the state. Providing the system is a company called Carbon Vision, which has a proven track record of providing “green” systems at other universities in Ohio. This system would help the University comply with state mandates to reduce fuel consumption by 20 percent by July, 2014.
The Board highlighted outstanding student athlete Charlie Bull, the first member of the men’s golf team to compete at the NCAA regional championships, and the first UA golfer to be named to the PING All-Region Team; and the Board provided Brandon Padgett, head coach of the UA tennis team, with a framed resolution recognizing several players on the team and the entire team’s performance in its second consecutive Mid-American Conference championship and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament. The team has compiled historic records of 20-5 (2011 season) and 24-4 (2012 season).
COMPLIANCE TIP OF THE WEEK
We hope to have a large group of Zips fans in Knoxville to cheer us on against the Tennessee Volunteers, but please secure your tickets through appropriate sources and do not offer our student-athletes money or anything else of value in return for being placed on the Player Guest list for Saturday. It is against NCAA rules for our student-athletes to profit off of the complimentary admissions that are provided to them.
ZIPS CLIPS AND CONGRATS TO …
… Men’s Soccer senior goalkeeper David Meves, who was named MAC Player of the Week after posting shutouts this weekend in a 0-0 tie over No. 10 St. John's and a 5-0 win vs. No. 11 South Florida. He was named Defensive MVP of The University of Akron Tournament, and currently sits in second place on the school's all-time list.
… Men’s Soccer senior midfielder Scott Caldwell, for being named a candidate for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award – which is awarded to a NCAA Division I senior with notable achievements in the community, the classroom, his or her character and in competition – and for being named to National Team of the Week by College Soccer News.
… Football senior quarterback Dalton Williams, who was one of 12 players to earn honorable mention recognition for the Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week Award after completing 37-of-48 passes for 446 yards and three touchdowns Saturday. Dalton is tied for second nationally in Division I FBS with 10 TD passes this season.
… Football head coach Terry Bowden, on his first win as a Zip with our record-setting 66-6 victory Saturday over Morgan State. As you know, his slogan this year is “Believe” … and at the end of this game, the AK-Rowdies appropriately sang, “I BELIEVE THAT WE HAVE WON!” Here’s to hearing that many more times this year …
… best of luck to Volleyball, our lone Zips home event this week, which opens Mid-American Conference play vs. Buffalo tomorrow (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at the JAR.
