TOP-RANKED MEN’S SOCCER HOSTS MAC TOURNAMENT
Congratulations to our Men’s Soccer program for finishing the regular season as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation! This is Coach Porter and our team’s favorite time of year, so let’s support them as they begin the “second season” in pursuit of another national championship.
We need you to #FillTheHill at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow when we host Bowling Green in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. We are ranked atop all of the major polls, and we want that to continue as the NCAA determines seeding for the national tournament. The best way to do that is to win the MAC title and enter NCAA play with two more victories added onto our winning streak. Postseason tickets are available here or by calling 888-99-AKRON (25766) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.
Our team will be at Johnny J’s in the Valley at 5:30 p.m. Monday for an NCAA Selection Show Watch Party, so we’ll know more then about our postseason path to Hoover, Alabama (site of this year’s College Cup). We’ll also have it airing in Tommy Evans Lounge for those with passes to the Lounge who want to come early to the 7 p.m. Men’s Basketball home opener vs. John Carroll.
SPEAKING OF THE MAC TOURNAMENT …
… congratulations to our Volleyball program and head coach Ron Arenz for clinching a spot in the 2012 MAC Tournament, beginning Nov. 16 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva. We secured a top-8 finish and a spot in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2003.
Their regular season has two remaining important home matches that we hope you will attend:
-Tomorrow at 7 p.m., we host Kent State at James A. Rhodes Arena in the next round of the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge. We defeated our rivals earlier this season and are looking for the season sweep!
-Saturday at 5 p.m., we host Ohio on Senior Day for Tina Dimitrijevs, Chelsea Harvey, Morgan Kuhn, Janine Lawler and Paiton Twitty.
THINK BIGGER … CROWDS
Basketball season starts tomorrow night for the Men at Coastal Carolina, and for the Women at noon Saturday at the JAR. Our ticket sales continue to blow past last year’s figures, so don’t delay in making your ticket purchase or you will get shut out of the biggest games of the season!
Please click here for one more way that shows that we have begun to #ThinkBigger.
FINAL FOOTBALL GAME
Join us for the final home football game of 2012 at 2 p.m. Saturday at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field, when we host Massachusetts. Between a Veterans Day Celebration, Youth Football Day, and a Browns Backers event featuring a pre-game autograph session with Kevin Mack, Webster Slaughter and Eric Metcalf, there will be plenty going on – including a 14-man Senior Day recognition.
Saturday offers you one final opportunity to watch at home the MAC’s top-ranked passing offense led by senior quarterback Dalton Williams, who now holds the record for most touchdown passes thrown in one season by a Zip. The forecast calls for sun and 60-plus degree weather, and tickets are available here.
COMMITMENT TO OUR COACHES
We’re pleased to announce that Women’s Tennis Brandon Padgett signed a two-year contract. In two years he has led us to our first two MAC titles in program history – he clearly has elevated our program, and believes that we have yet to reach our ceiling.
Also, we named Vernon Croft as the head coach of our Women’s Soccer program. Vernon served in an interim capacity this past season, and we look forward to seeing what he does with our team as we move forward.
MUST WATCH YOUTUBE: WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A ZIP
If you want to know what the student-athlete experience is like for a Zip, watch these videos of our seniors from Women’s Soccer, Men’s Soccer and Volleyball … my hope is that hearing directly from our student-athletes reminds you why you support the Zips.
