Greetings from Costa Rica! Our Women’s Basketball team’s Foreign Tour has been a wonderful trip so far – two wins, sight-seeing and some Zip-Lining for the Zips. Follow our blog for real-time updates!
This week the 2012-13 Zips Athletics year officially is in full swing, as we host our first regular-season contest (in Women’s Soccer vs. Morehead State at 5 p.m. tomorrow at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field, followed by a Men’s Soccer exhibition match at 7:30 p.m. vs. Wright State) while our other fall teams already on campus – football and volleyball – continue preparing for their competition seasons.
We have made great strides in ticket sales, especially in
football, but now is the time when we need EVERY ZIP to do your
part and support our teams by purchasing tickets (and encourage
others to do the same). Please visit ZipsTickets.com or GoZips.com/tickets anytime or call our staff at
888-99-AKRON (25766) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays to renew
or purchase your tickets. We have plenty of options, both in
pricing and number of games, so please officially join our team
this year by supporting our student-athletes and coaches as they
proudly represent The University of Akron.
LET’S PLAY TWO ON THE PITCH …
… as I mentioned, our Women and Men’s Soccer teams have a home doubleheader tomorrow (5 p.m. Women, 7:30 p.m. Men). All Men’s Soccer season ticketholders will be admitted to the Women’s Soccer match with their ticket to the Men’s game, so come early and join us for both (please note that all seating at Women’s matches is general admission).
Vernon Croft has jumped right into the head coaching role, and he and our women would appreciate your support as we start our season.
Also, our men's soccer team is the pre-season favorite in the MAC and has been nationally ranked in the top 10 in at least one preseason poll.
If you cannot make it to a game in person, we will be streaming it live online, with a link available at GoZips.com.
SIGN UP FOR THE KICKOFF LUNCHEON NEXT WEEK
I hope you’re looking forward to our first Football Kickoff Luncheon, with head coach Terry Bowden and the team, on Friday, Aug. 24 at noon at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field. We’ll have a tailgate spread of food for lunch and you’ll have the chance to sit, eat and interact with our student-athletes and coaches. This will be a unique and fun event for Zips fans to break bread with the team and let them know you’re looking forward to watching them play and coach this year.
Table sponsorships are available, which include eight seats at the event (you’ll be seated with student-athletes and/or a member of our football coaching staff) plus club-level tickets to the much-anticipated season opener on Aug. 30 vs. Central Florida (as well as a “Hoppy Hour” pre-game meal and networking event on game day). Bring your friends, your co-workers, your family – as we’ve said before, getting involved is the best way you can help us reach our goals.
SPEAKING OF GETTING INVOLVED …
We will mark the start of #BowdenBall (to use the Twitter hashtag) by hosting our first Zips Athletics Social Media Day on Aug. 30. For the UCF game, 15 lucky Zips followers will have the opportunity to experience what traditional media members do on a football game-day. Those chosen – and you can enter-to-win here (use special offer code: MEDIA) – will be required to actively engage their social media accounts on the day of the game and participate as members of the media.
To further push this game digitally, the Mid-American Conference announced that the Zips-UCF contest will be the first stop on the MAC’s Social Media Road Tour.
VISION 2020: WEAR IT WITH PRIDE!
Lopez won a Barnes & Noble Book and a $100 gift card from Penn Station. Good work, Nick!
CONGRATS TO …
… senior midfielder Scott Caldwell for being named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America …
… junior defender Amber Kern for being named a first-team preseason All-MAC section by College Sports Madness …
