Jean Linton (Rifle,
1960-64)
Jean Linton played prominent role in establishing women’s
intercollegiate athletics on The University of Akron campus. She
became the second female to earn a varsity letter as a freshman in
1960-61, was the first UA female athlete to be named an
All-American, not once, but twice in 1961 and 1962, and in 1963-64,
she became the first woman to earn four varsity letters. Linton's
288.8 average during her freshman season not only topped the UA
team to lead them to the conference title, but was the top average
among 135 male shooters in the Lake Erie Intercollegiate Rifle
Conference (LEIRC). At the National Rifle Association (NRA)
Sectional Championship in Buffalo, N.Y., Linton earned the Most
Valuable Rifleman Award and garnered All-America honors by matching
her high score of 295. It was the highest collegiate women’s
score in the nation that year. The following season, Linton fired
her all-time high score of 297, increasing her season average to
293 to lead both Akron and the LEIRC. She led UA to another
conference championship and took individual honors at the NRA
Sectional in Buffalo with a 290 score and was tabbed as an
All-American for the second time. In her last season of 1963-64,
Linton helped UA capture its 11th LEIRC Championship in 14 seasons
and she wrapped up her career by finishing second at the NRA
Tourney with a 285 score. Linton became the first woman inducted
into the University's Varsity "A" Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.
Katie Orlando McCumiskey
(Tennis; 1990-93)
The first UA women's tennis player to be nominated for and voted
into the University's Sports Hall of Fame (2010 class) … is
listed fifth on the program's all-time wins list with 152 (79
singles, 73 doubles) … those 79 singles victories ranks her
tied for third in a career in program history, while the 73 doubles
wins lists her sixth in that category … two-time All-North
Star Conference selection (1990, 1991) … was the first UA
player to earn All-MAC honors, being named to the first team as a
senior in 1993 … claimed the No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles
championship at the North Star Conference tournament as a freshman
… in 1993 became the youngest United States
Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Certified Professional in
the state of Ohio … in 2007 was named the USPTA Pro of the
Year.
