Dom Iero, Baseball
Sophomore infielder Dom Iero (North Canton, Ohio) was named the Zips' Student-Athlete of the Week on Feb. 23.
Iero led Akron in its series against Charlotte over the weekend, collecting four of the team’s six total RBI in two clutch at-bats.
Two of his RBI came on Sunday with Akron down two runs in the top of the ninth inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Iero launched a two-run sacrifice fly deep to right center, allowing the runners from second and third to score and tie the game. His game-tying sacrifice fly set up sophomore catcher Brian Lees for a game-winning RBI single in the next at-bat to win 5-4 and take the series.
Iero was also key in the Zips’ other win, coming in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader as he registered both of Akron’s RBI. Down one run with two outs, Iero clubbed a two-run single to put Akron ahead 2-1, which would be the final score.
With six RBI coming in the Zips' season-opening series at Furman, Iero has now collected a team-leading 10 RBI, tying his 2014 season total.
On the season, he holds team-high marks in three other categories with a .400 batting average (8-of-20), a .500 on base percentage and .550 slugging percentage. He also has a pair of stolen bases and a home run.
