Sam Gainford - Men's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio - Sam Gainford (Liverpool, England), a redshirt sophomore on the men's soccer team, was named the Zips' Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by The University of Akron, Ohio's Polytechnic University.
Gainford turned in a strong opening weekend for the Zips leading the squad to a 1-1 mark on the strength of registering two goals on three shots, with both his shots on goal resulting in goals.
In Akron's 3-2 double-overtime triumph at VCU he recorded the Zips' initial two goals in the contest. He broke open a scoreless contest in the 55th minute (54:48) collecting an unassisted tally to give Akron a 1-0 lead.
With the game tied at one, he again found the back of the net at the 77:12 mark to regain a 2-1 Zips' advantage.
In a 4-1 setback at No. 24 Old Dominion he recorded a shot.
On the season, he is tied for the team lead in goals (2) and points (4), while ranking second in shots on goal (2) and fourth in total shots (3).
Gainford and the Zips return to action on Friday, Sept. 4, traveling to Washington, D.C., to battle third-ranked Georgetown in a 4 p.m. matinee affair.
