AKRON, Ohio - Sophomore Liz Murphy (Yackandandah, Australia), freshman Shaena Brew (Rialto, Calif.) and sophomore Izzy Callaway (Copley, Ohio) combined to score 49 of Akron's 64 total points, but the Zips fell to UMass, 74-64, at James A. Rhodes Arena on Wednesday (March 4).
Murphy led the Zips with a career-high 21-point and career-best eight-rebound performance. Brew added 15 points and two steals, while Callaway added 13 points.
The Akron offense was strong from downtown, knocking down 10 threes on 28 attempts. Murphy hit five treys for the Zips in the contest.
How It Happened
Akron fell behind 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and faced a 31-17 halftime deficit.
After intermission, Akron cut its deficit to 46-34 before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a three from Callaway, to trim its deficit to 46-44 with 2:11 to go in the third. UMass countered and stretched its lead to 50-46 heading into the fourth. Akron knocked down seven three-pointers in the quarter to score 21 of its 29 total points.
Akron evened the score at 50 on a pair of free throws from sophomore Ni'Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio) with 9:07 to play. The Minutewomen regained the advantage en route to securing a final of 74-64. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 18 points in the paint.
