FAIRFAX, Va. — The Akron women's basketball team dropped its first road contest of the 2026-27 campaign, as they lost to George Mason, 66-60, at EagleBank Arena.
The Zips held the lead for the entire first quarter until 15 seconds left in the period when the Patriots tied it up on a layup. The score held at 14-14 at quarter's end.
Less than a minute into the second period, GMU took their first lead of the game on a triple. The game tinkered back and forth, with the lead growing to no more than four for either side for the rest of the half. George Mason held a 34-31 advantage into the locker room.
The Patriots went on a 10-5 run to open the third and did not give up their advantage for the rest of the quarter. However, Shaena Brew hit a jumper with one second left to cut the deficit to one, 53-52.
The fourth quarter featured just a total of 21 points but was a back-and-forth period. Jessie Joaquim's layup led off the stanza to take a one-point lead. Two Patriot free throws and a Teniesha Clarke layup led to another one-point advantage for Akron with 7:55 left.
The next five minutes resulted in only four points. A GMU layup at 5:49 led the Patriots to a 57-56 advantage, and Brew sunk a free throw to knot the game at 57-57 with 2:52 left.
It was all George Mason from there, as they closed out the final two minutes on a 9-3 run. Despite Tyla Heard tying the game once more on a layup with 1:50 remaining, GMU hit a triple on their ensuing possession that ignited their offense.
Brew led the way with 11 points for the Zips, while Heard, Macey Fegan and Joaquim each registered eight points. As a team, Akron shot 40.7% from the field and 20% from deep.
