Zips Fall 20-7 to Miami

AKRON, Ohio -- Akron Zips fell 20-7 to Miami at InfoCision Field Summa Health Field on Saturday afternoon.
Ben Finley led Akron's passing attack with 211 yards on 21 of 39 passing which included a touchdown and an interception. Finley a 20-yard long pass to Kyan Mason, who finished with a team-best 52 receiving yards on five receptions. Israel Polk also caught five passes, including a 5-yard TD pass with 6:54 left to play in the game for the Zips lone score. Jordan Gant rushed for 35 yards to lead the Zips' ground attack, while Sean Patrick (20 yards) and Finley (7 yards) followed.
Defensively, the Zips caused major problems for the RedHawk offense in the first half, limiting Miami to a field goal and only 147  total yards on the ground. Shammond Cooper led the Zips in tackles with eight takedowns with four solo stops and 0.5 tackles for loss of one yard -- DiMMarco Johnson also registered 0.5 tackles for loss. The Zips had four total tackles for loss as Gage Summers posted a team-best two sacks for three total yards of loss and Cyrus Durham had the other sack for a two-yard loss. Summers and Johnson recorded six and three tackles, respectively. Elijah Reed registered Akron's lone takeaway with an interception at the end of the first half and collected six total tackles.Â
The RedHawks improved to 3-3 on the year and 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Zips fell to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference standings.
How It Happened
After Miami (OH) took a 20-0 lead, Akron got on the board with 6:54 left in the fourth quarter to narrow the margin to 20-7. Neither team scored again in the game.
