Second-Half Effort Powers Colgate Past Akron, 62-45

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The University of Akron women's basketball team dropped a 62-45 decision to Colgate in the title game of the Colgate Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday (Nov. 30).
Junior Kam'Ren Rhodes (Chandler, Ariz.) directed the Zips' attack with a game-high 12 points to earn All-Tournament accolades, while senior Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) added a six-point and six-rebound performance. Junior Liisa Taponen (Tampere, Finland) also tacked on five points and six rebounds to go along with an eight-point effort from junior Maddie Vejsicky (New Concord, Ohio).
The Akron defense held Colgate shooters to just 39.3 percent from the field, including 16.7 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
Akron started off strong, putting together an 18-17 lead heading into the second quarter. Akron did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 18 points close to the basket.
The Zips struggled offensively in the second quarter with the Raiders posting a 17-6 scoring edge in the quarter and entered halftime trailing 34-24.
Akron's deficit continued in the third quarter as the Zips faced a 50-35 disadvantage heading to the final period Akron played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 11 points in the paint.
Colgate constructed a 52-35 advantage before Akron went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Mobley's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 52-42 with 5:07 to go in the contest. Colgate responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 62-45. Akron fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 10 points.
