Akron Captures Series at Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The University of Akron softball team garnered a split of its season-ending doubleheader at Central Michigan on Saturday (May 6) as the Zips dropped a 3-2 decision in nine innings in the opener before earning a 6-5 triumph in the nightcap.
The Zips came into the day needing a pair of victories to secure the fourth and final Mid-American Conference Tournament berth and the squad's first since the 2017 campaign.
Akron rallied twice to tie the game in the opener, including scoring the equalizer in the top of the seventh inning, but the Chippewas collected the game-winning run with a single in the ninth inning.
Sophomore Alexis Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.) and freshman Meagan Lee (Leander, Texas) tallied RBI singles in the affair, while freshman Brooke Sivek (Leander, Texas) finished the game 5-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
Redshirt senior P Alexa DiFeo (Akron, Ohio) earned the start for the Zips and struck out a trio of batters, while freshman P Haley Croyle (Hubbard, Ohio) worked 4.2 innings of relief and fanned five batters.
In game two, the Zips pounded out three runs in the first inning and added two more tallies in the third inning to jump out to a 5-2 lead. Central Michigan tied the game at five before Akron went ahead to stay when redshirt junior Shelby Fortune (LaGrange, Ohio) hammered a 1-1 pitch over the wall in center field for her first home run of the season.
Redshirt junior Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Zips, while Fortune added a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI and a run scored. Additionally, freshman Abigail Scheller (North Hills, Pa.) collected a pair of RBI.
Redshirt senior P Olivia Otani (Canton, Ohio) worked 5.0 innings and struck out two in the starting assignment, while junior P Olivia Stefanoni (Hudson, Ohio) picked up the win with three innings of three-strikeout relief.
Akron concluded its 2023 campaign with a 28-23 record, including a 16-13 mark in the MAC. The 28 victories is the most for the Zips since the 2016 campaign, while Akron posted its highest win total in league play since 2002.
