Zips Turn in Impressive Spring Semester in the Classroom

AKRON, Ohio – With grades for the 2023 spring semester now finalized, University of Akron Athletics has surpassed its goal of a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average for 10th straight academic school year with student-athletes combining to achieve a department-wide grade point average of 3.045 in the spring 2023 semester as part of an impressive overall GPA of 3.034 for the 2022-23 academic year.
Collectively, Akron student-athletes own a cumulative departmental GPA of 3.212, with nearly 54 percent of Zips maintaining an individual cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better at Akron.
"We are incredibly proud of the work our student-athletes put forth in the classroom throughout the academic year, and are also appreciative of the outstanding faculty, academic success team and our head coaches for their roles in pursuing academic excellence," said Director of Athletics Charles Guthrie. "These young men and women are outstanding representatives of the University of Akron. Their drive to be the best both in competition and in the classroom is evident in the accomplishments that they attained during the spring semester."
The Zips registered 140 Academic All-Mid-American Conference selections across its 14 MAC-sponsored teams for the 2022-23 academic year.
Akron had 30 student-athletes honored with the MAC President's Award, along with 60 and 224 Zips named to the MAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and MAC Honor Roll, respectively.
For the spring semester of 2023, 11 of 15 Akron athletics teams achieved a semester grade point average of 3.00 or higher, led by women's soccer earning a program-best 3.586 team GPA for the semester. Additionally, golf, swimming and diving, volleyball, women's basketball, rifle, women's cross country, lacrosse, men's soccer, softball and women's track and field each surpassed the 3.00 team GPA threshold registering marks of 3.555, 3.53, 3.519, 3.508, 3.331, 3.242, 3.239, 3.165, 3.144 and 3.01, respectively.
For the 2022-23 academic year, 12 of the Zips' 15 squads garnered a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better, paced by a program-best 3.527 GPA from golf. Additionally, volleyball (3.524), swimming and diving (3.518), women's basketball (3.505), women's cross country (3.488), women's soccer (3.431), rifle (3.326), lacrosse (3.221), men's soccer (3.011), women's track and field (3.096), softball (3.059) and men's track and field (3.050).
The excellence of the Zips in their academic studies was on display as more than 62 percent of Akron's student-athletes, 236 of 379, earned an individual GPA for the term of 3.0 or better, while nearly 38 percent garnered a GPA of 3.50 or higher. On the year, more than 62 percent, 272 of Akron's 437 student-athletes, posted a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, with more than 35 percent registering a GPA of 3.50 or higher.
Twenty-four of the Zips' student-athletes garnered a perfect 4.0 GPA for the spring semester, including three each from the football, swimming and diving, volleyball and women's track and field teams. For the academic year, 12 Zips owned a 4.0 cumulative GPA, with five student-athletes carrying an unblemished GPA overall at Akron.
Additionally, 122 Akron student-athletes posted a GPA between 3.5-3.99 for the spring semester, and 92 followed with individual GPAs in the 3.0-3.49 range.
Football paced the combined list with 30 Zips earning between a 3.0-3.99 for the spring semester and 49 for the 2022-23 academic year. They were followed by lacrosse (20 overall/24 for 2022-23), swimming and diving (20/25), men's track and field (20/20), men's soccer (17/16), women's soccer (17/18), baseball (15/19), softball (15/15), rifle (11/11), women's track and field (10/14), volleyball (10/14), women's basketball (8/11), men's basketball (7/8), cross country (7/10) and golf (5/6).
