Gatrall Selected to Compete for Team Canada at the 2023 Pan American Games

TORONTO – Junior swimmer Madelyn Gatrall (Windsor, Ont.) was one of 18 women's swimmers selected to compete for Team Canada at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, Swimming Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee announced Thursday.
In all, 36 athletes were selected (18 men and 18 women) for Team Canada based on their performances at the 2023 Bell Canadian Swimming Trials on March 28 to April 2 at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.
Gatrall posted personal best times in four of five events at the Canadian trials, while qualifying for the A finals in three backstroke events and the B final in a pair of freestyle events.
In the 50 Back, Gatrall finished third overall, earning a bronze medal with a 28.61 time which was 0.30 faster than her prelim time and 0.58 faster than her career best. She placed fourth in the 100 Back with a 1:01.40 time, besting her seed time by 0.22 and previous career mark by 1.13 seconds. She earned seventh place in the 200 Back (2:15.73) while eclipsing her prelim mark by 2.26 seconds and falling just shy of her career fastest 2:14.79 time. Gatrall also set career marks in the 50 and 100 freestyle events while placing 13th in both races with 26.28 and 56.62 times. Her previous best times were 26.47 and 57.21, respectively.
Santiago 2023 will be the first time that Chile hosts the Pan American Games. The Games are scheduled for October 20 through November 5, 2023, and will feature approximately 7,000 athletes from 41 countries competing in 39 sports. Swimming at Santiago 2023 is slated for October 21-25 at the Centro Acuático del Estadio Nacional.
