Hot Shooting Propels Ball State Past Akron in MAC Tournament Quarterfinals

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The sixth-seeded University of Akron women's basketball team fell to the third-seeded Ball State, 92-68, in the quarterfinal round of the 2023 Mid-American Conference Tournament at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore F Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to lead the Zips' offensive efforts, while pulling down a team-best seven rebounds. The first-team All-MAC honoree shot 9-of-12 from the floor and was perfect from the charity stripe, converting six bonus buckets. Joining Bass with double-figure scoring performances were senior guards Dominique Camp (Dayton, Ohio) and Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa.) with 18 and 10 points, respectively.
The Zips (17-13) shot nearly 49.0 percent (25-of-51) from the field and 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the free throw line, but the third-seeded Cardinals (25-7) shot a scorching 54.1 percent (33-of-61) from the field, including a 39.1 percent showing from deep (9-of-23).
Trailing by 10 at halftime, 41-31, Akron opened the second half on a 6-0 run over the first 1:03 of third quarter, to cut its deficit to four, 41-37, on a pair of baskets from Bass and jumper by Camp.
The Cardinals answered with a run of their own to extend their margin in the third quarter with an 11-2 run as part of an overall 64.3 percent shooting mark in the period to lead, 66-51. The Zips connected on 58.3 percent of their attempts in the third quarter en route to finishing the half registering a .545 shooting performance.
Ball State continued its hot shooting in the final period to extend its lead en route to securing the victory.
The Cardinals had four double-digit scorers led by a 20-point effort from Anna Clephane.
Akron senior F Molly Neitzel (Rocky River, Ohio) and redshirt junior G Layne Ferrell (Franklin, Ohio) added seven and five points, respectively.
