Zips Turn in Impressive Year in the Classroom

AKRON, Ohio - Student-athletes at the University of Akron combined to achieve a department-wide grade point average of 2.979 in the spring 2022 semester as part of an impressive overall GPA of 3.029 for the 2021-22 academic year.

Collectively, Akron student-athletes own a cumulative departmental GPA of 3.253, with nearly 62 percent of Zips maintaining an individual cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better at Akron.

The Zips registered a league-best 173 Academic All-Mid-American Conference selections across its 16 MAC-sponsored teams for the 2021-22 academic year.

Akron had 43 student-athletes honored with the MAC President's Award, along with 102 and 108 Zips named to the MAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and MAC Honor Roll, respectively.

For the spring semester of 2022, 11 of 15 Akron athletics teams achieved a semester grade point average of 3.00 or higher, led by swimming and diving earning a program-best 3.553 team GPA for the semester. Additionally, women's basketball, women's soccer, volleyball, women's track and field, lacrosse, women's golf, women's cross country, rifle, softball and men's soccer each surpassed the 3.00 team GPA threshold registering marks of 3.435, 3.328, 3.299, 3.273, 3.212, 3.202, 3.127, 3.12, 3.08, 3.065, respectively.

For the 2021-22 academic year, 12 of the Zips' 15 squad garnered a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better, paced by a program-best 3.543 GPA from swimming and diving. Additionally, women's soccer (3.373), women's basketball (3.36), volleyball (3.330), women's track and field (3.318), golf (3.313), softball (3.242), rifle (3.216), cross country (3.141), lacrosse (3.102), men's soccer (3.058) and baseball (3.021) surpassed the 3.0 cumulative GPA mark.

The excellence of the Zips in their academic studies was on display as more than 62 percent of Akron's student-athletes, 281 of 451, earned an individual GPA for the term of 3.0 or better, while more than 37 percent garnered a GPA of 3.50 or higher. On the year, nearly 62 percent, 285 of Akron's 460 student-athletes, posted a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, with nearly 36 percent registering a GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Thirty-one of the Zips' student-athletes garnered a perfect 4.0 GPA for the spring semester, including four each from the baseball, football softball and women's track and field teams, three from swimming and diving and women's soccer, two apiece from cross country and golf, and one each from men's soccer, lacrosse, rifle, men's track and field and volleyball. For the academic year, 13 Zips owned a 4.0 cumulative GPA, with seven student-athletes carrying an unblemished GPA overall at Akron.

Additionally, 136 Akron student-athletes posted a GPA between 3.5-3.99 for the spring semester, and 114 followed with individual GPAs in the 3.0-3.49 range.

Football paced the combined list with 46 Zips earning between a 3.0-3.99 for the spring semester and 48 for the 2021-22 academic year. They were followed by swimming and diving (29 overall/32 for 2021-22), lacrosse (25/25), baseball (21/24), softball (21/19), men's track and field (19/23), women's track and field (19/22), men's soccer (18/22), women's soccer (18/26), cross country (15/19), rifle (14), volleyball (14/16), women's basketball (13/14), golf (5/6) and men's basketball (4/3).

Sixty-nine Zips earned their degrees from the University of Akron following the spring semester of 2021 as part of 99 overall student-athletes to collect their degrees for the 2021-22 academic year.
