Golden Goal Lifts Youngstown State Past Akron, 12-11

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The University of Akron women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-11 Mid-American Conference decision at Youngstown State (3-2, 1-0 MAC) on Thursday, March 3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The two sides exchanged the first four goals of the match with junior Abby McMullen (Medina, Ohio) opening the scoring for the Zips (2-4, 1-1 MAC) finding the back of the net at the 13:56 mark of the initial quarter before junior Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) netted the first of four goals on the afternoon at the 10:44 mark.
• Youngstown State connected on four unanswered tallies to assume a 5-2 lead before sophomore Chloe Hererra (Houston, Texas) capped the scoring in the initial stanza with her second goal of the year with nine seconds left in the quarter.
• The Penguins delivered the first goal of the second period before tallies from Kiefer, sophomore Noelle Boyd (Murrysville, Pa.) and sophomore Anjali Silverheels (Hamburg, N.Y.) at the 8:20, 5:36 and 3:30 marks, respectively, knotted the tilt at six with 3:30 remaining before halftime.
• Youngstown State led at the intermission, 7-6, with the Penguins outshooting Akron, 18-13, over the first 30 minutes.
• The Zips registered three unanswered tallies to open the second half courtesy of goals from Boyd, Kiefer and Silverheels to assume a 9-7 advantage.
• With the contest squared at 10 in the fourth quarter, Kiefer delivered her fourth goal of the afternoon with 31 seconds left in the match, to give Akron an 11-10 lead.
• The Penguins netted the equalizer with nine ticks left in regulation before delivering the game-winner with 1:59 left in the first overtime session.
• Kiefer and Boyd directed the Zips' offensive efforts with eight and five shots, respectively, including six and five shots on goal.
• Hererra recorded a pair of assists on the afternoon, while junior Sarah Pattison (Cincinnati, Ohio) added an assist.
• Freshman GK Hannah Sanders (Massillon, Ohio) pulled in nine saves in her collegiate debut.
