ATHENS, Ohio-Â Akron had four players score in double figures as the Zips avenged Monday's loss to Ohio in an 88-77 victory over the Bobcats on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
Â
It was a career-scoring day for a duo of Akron players as junior Lonasia Brewer (Akron, Ohio) recorded a career-best 22 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, while redshirt freshman Alanna Carter (Mason, Ohio) scored a career-best 11 points and brought down six boards. Junior Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was a threat beyond the arc knocking down 4 three-pointers, and ending the game with a season-best 18 points and six rebounds.
Â
Redshirt Senior Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W Va.) added another stellar performance making her case for MAC Player of the Year, scored a team-high 24 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out six assists, and had three steals.
Â
The Akron offense succeeded largely because the entire lineup dished out dimes all afternoon long, assisting on an impressive 22 of the Zips' 29 field goals. Additionally, a 24-15 score edge from 3-point range and 22-of-26 shooting at the foul line was central to the win.
Â
The Zips (15-9, 12-6 MAC) and Bobcats simply couldn't shake one another in the opening half as the margins after the first two quarters were two and three points, but the relentless effort of Akron answered every run Ohio used to break open the game. Despite the Bobcats taking a five-point lead late in the second quarter after trailing by as much as nine in the opening stanza, Akron only allowed Ohio to take the lead (44-43) once during the second half.
Â
Akron shot over 66 percent (66.7 percent) from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the arc in the final quarter and limited the Bobcats to just 25 percent from beyond the arc. Rebounding became huge down the final stretch as Akron out-rebounded Ohio in the fourth quarter, 13-3, and scored six second-chance points, all coming from Dawson down the final stretch.
Â
Cece Hooks led the Bobcats with 35 points, while Erica Johnson added 19.
Â
Akron is nearing the end of #MACtion regular season play as the Zips close out the season with a two-game homestand. The Zips will start the week hosting Buffalo on Wednesday, March 2 for a 7 p.m. game, before closing out the regular season with Miami on Saturday, March 5 at 2 p.m.
