Gorecka Wins 200 Back, Zips Fall to No.5 Ohio State

Columbus, Ohio – Senior Weronika Gorecka captured Akron's lone gold medal as the Zips swimming and diving team collected nine medals but fell 224-71 to No. 5 Ohio State at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on Friday.

Gorecka won the 200-yard backstroke with a 1:59.60 time, before Akron opened the meet with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard medley relay as junior Madelyn Gatrall (25.65), senior Andrea Fischer (28.59), sophomore Abigail Daniel (24.24) and senior Rachel Schiffli (23.35) stopped the timer at 1:41.83. Junior Madelyn Dyer also collected a silver medal in the 200-yard breaststroke 2:18.23 time.

Gatrall (55.59) and Gorecka (52.81) earned the Zips' second medal of the meet, collecting bronze medals in the 2 x 100-yard backstroke relay with a 1:48.40 time. Fischer (1:04.85) and senior Sara Bozso (1:04.81) followed with a bronze medal performance in the 2 x 100-yard breaststroke event, touching just 0.02 behind the silver team with a 2:09.66 time.

Junior Rachel Sabotin added to the medal count with a bronze in the 200-yard butterfly with a 2:03.08, while senior Paige Kalik finished third in 3-meter diving (313.80). Sophomore Rebecca Reid (52.31) and Schiffli (52.70) captured the Zips' fifth bronze medal in the 2 x 100-yard freestyle relay with a (1:45.01), while the 2 x 100-yard butterfly relay team of Daniel (54.96) and Schiffli (55.90) recorded the final bronze with a 1:50.86 time.

The Zips will be back in action on Nov. 5 at Noon in Muncie, Ind. against Ball State.
