Mount Pleasant, Mich.-Â The Akron women's basketball team was lights out from beyond the arc shooting 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from long range en route to a 70-60 victory over Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon at McGuirk Arena. The victory marks the first win at Central Michigan since the 2015 season for the Zips.
Â
Along with shooting lights out, Akron (9-6, 6-3 MAC) out-rebounded Central Michigan, 48-30, and 18-12 on offensive boards.
Â
Redshirt senior Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W Va.) the only player ranked in the top five in the MAC for both scoring and rebounding – was once again an all-around force with 23 points, 12 rebounds, recording her eighth double-double. Sophomore guard Layne Ferrell (Franklin, Ohio) added 15 points knocking down 3-of-4 triples, and nine boards.
Â
Neither side could break away from each other throughout the opening 20 minutes as the Zips and Chippewas were tied at the end of the first quarter and the Zips headed into the break with a 34-31 lead. The largest lead in the first half was three points for each team, but it was the Zips who mounted the last run of the second quarter, besting the Chippewas 5-1 in the final 1:30 that sent Akron into the locker room with a 34-31 edge over CMU.
Â
Coming out of the break, an explosive 10-2 surge saw the Zips attack the paint with a driving layup from Lonasia Brewer (Akron, Ohio) and back-to-back jumpers from Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio). Ferrell's second three-pointer put the Zips up by nine (42-33) and forced the Chippewas to call a timeout at the 6:52 mark.
Â
The Chippewas hung around as a 9-2 run got CMU within two, 44-42 over three minutes. Akron remained without a basket for another two minutes before Ferrell knocked down a jumper to get the Zips offense back on track.
Â
Akron used the final two minutes of the third quarter to rifle off a 7-2 run that consisted of a triple from Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa) and back-to-back layups from Kendall Miller (Akron, Ohio) and Bass, that extended the Zips lead to 54-48.
Â
Akron held the Chippewas scoreless for four minutes and ran the floor late in the fourth quarter as the Zips extended their lead to 64-50 with the help of an 8-0 run. CMU forced four turnovers during an 8-0 run in the final four minutes of the game and was able to close the Zips' lead to 64-58, but the efforts weren't enough as Akron held on for the victory.
Â
The Zips will return home on Wednesday, Feb. 2 as Akron hosts Western Michigan at James A. Rhodes Arena for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
