Fourth-Quarter Surge Pushes Buffalo Past Akron

BUFFALO, N.Y.-Â Buffalo out-scored the Zips 18-9 in the fourth quarter, as Akron (7-5, 4-2 MAC) suffered a 76-59 setback on Wednesday night at Alumni Arena.
Freshman Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) led the Zips with a career-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while also grabbing six boards. Redshirt senior Jordyn Dawson rounded out the double-figure scoring with 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
The Zips struggled to make shots for several stretches and finished with a 37.5 field goal percentage (24-of-64) and connected on 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) from beyond the arc. Akron recorded assists on 19 of 24 baskets.
After being down by 16-points (49-33) in the third quarter, Akron put together a 15-6 scoring run that trimmed the Bulls lead to single-digits, 55-48. Freshman Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind.) highlighted the run with five points and ended the third quarter with seven. Akron closed the third quarter on 40 percent shooting and forced Buffalo to turn the ball over five times, scoring six points off the Bull's miscues. Â
The Zips' offense continued attacking at the beginning of the fourth quarter as Akron put together a 5-0 run to get within five, 58-53. Both teams suffered a scoring drought before Buffalo opened a 14-3 run over six minutes that put the Bulls up by 17, with three minutes left to play, and the game was out of reach for the Zips' comeback efforts.
Buffalo won the battle of the boards out-rebounding Akron, 50-31, and bringing down 18 offensive boards that led to 10-second chance points. The Bulls were a force in the paint outscoring the Zips, 52-28.
The Bulls had four players in double figures with Dyaisha Fair leading the way with 20 points.
Akron returns to action on Monday, Jan. 24 as the Zips travel to Dekalb, Ill. To take on Northern Illinois. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
