Richmond, VA -- The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) announced that The University of Akron women's swimming & diving team has earned Scholar All-America honors for their efforts in the classroom last semester, while 10 student-athletes were named CSCAA Scholar All-Americans.
Â
The CSCAA named a total of 721 programs from 426 institutions earned the academic team honors as Akron registered a Fall 2020 GPA of 3.746 followed by a Spring 2021 GPA of 3.639 en route to a 3.692 overall team GPA for 2020-21 season.
Â
In addition, 789 swimmers and divers garnered Scholar All-American honors for the 2020-21 season as junior Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was selected to the CSCAA First-Team Scholar All-America team. Earning second-team accolades (also called Honorable Mention) were senior Andrea Bugariu (Shelby, Mich.), junior Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.), senior Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain), junior Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England), freshman Madelyn Gatrall (Windsor, Ontario, Canada), sophomore Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland), freshman Astrid Halvorsen (Stroemmen, Norway), junior Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden) and freshman Rachel Sabotin (Columbus, Ind.). The 10 selections represented the most student-athletes from any Mid-American Conference institution.
Â
The award recognizes students who achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and were invited to compete at their respective national championship. To qualify for First-Team Scholar All-America, student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher and participated in their national championship. Second-Team selections (also called Honorable Mention) must have also earned a 3.50 GPA or higher and achieved a "B" time standard for the national championship or participated at a diving zone qualification meet.
Â
Due to the cancellation of the Division III and NAIA championship, the CSCAA established time standards for qualification based on a standard deviation of previous national championship participation. All criteria can be found on the CSCAA website.
Â
The award-winners studied a multitude of subjects ranging from A (Accounting) to Z (Zoology). More than a third (35%) of all award-winners are pursuing a major in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) field. Business majors were the second-most represented with 23% of recipients followed by the social sciences (13%). The most popular majors were biology, exercise science, psychology, business administration, mechanical engineering, and finance.
Â
About the CSCAA: Founded in 1922, the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), is the nation's first organization of college coaches. The mission of the CSCAA is to advance the sport of swimming and diving with coaches at the epicenter of leadership, advocacy, and professional development.
