AKRON, Ohio – The inaugural edition of the Akron Athletics All-Sports Summer Golf Open, presented by Kaulig Companies was a resounding success – selling out of available foursomes two weeks in advance and generating over $60,000, the department announced on Thursday.
"This outing was a success on many fronts," Senior Associate Athletic Director George Van Horne said. "For the first time since March 2020 we were able to gather with our alumni and donors in a meaningful way. Participants loved having the opportunity to connect with representatives from all of our sports programs and now have a greater appreciation for all they do in and out of competition."
Lake Forest Country Club in Hudson, Ohio played host to this year's event on Monday, June 14, as guests were greeted by a custom wrapped Zips themed Chevy Camaro provided by football alumni and team owner of Kaulig Racing, Matt Kaulig at the entrance of the English Tudor Clubhouse.
The immaculately maintained course featured a variety of interactive actives and prizes as participants gathered for the first public in-person athletics event nearly 15 months. With approximately 100 volunteers from the Department of Athletics, golfers had the unique opportunity to connect with coaches and student-athletes from each of the 17 varsity sports, cheer and dance teams, and Zippy as the participants teed off thorough the day.
A highlight of the day came when Brian Lockhart, golfing as a member of the InfoCision sponsored foursome sank a hole-in-one on the 218-yard, par-3 No. 18 hole, winning a three-year lease on a 2021 Acura TLX. The hole and prize were sponsored by Serra Auto Park.
After the round was complete, attendees enjoyed a cocktail hour with hors d'oeuvres followed by a dinner and an awards presentation. The voice of the Akron Zips Dave Skoczen, served as master of ceremonies which included remarks from University President Gary Miller, newly appointed Director of Athletics Charles Guthrie, and Van Horne.
Prizes were awarded for longest drive (Rob McClenaghan) and longest putt (John Gaydos) as well as the top three winning teams of the outing. The foursome representing Jackson-Deiken insurance earned tournament championship honors with a 20-under par four-player scramble score. Dinner ended with the announcement of the of the Golden Ticket winner as Lewis Seikel won the 2021 drawing.
Akron Athletics thanks all of the generous sponsors, participants, and volunteers who made the event possible.
