AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron Athletics Department is expanding its Nike partnership, signing a five-year University-wide deal, Director of Athletics Larry Williams announced on June 16, 2021.
Â
The new partnership with Nike is scheduled to start July 1, 2021, and run for five years through June 30, 2026.
Â
Since June 2008, the Akron men's basketball program has partnered with Nike for the Zips' shoes, game uniforms, warm-ups, and accessories under the Nike and LeBron James brands. Akron is issued a variety of LeBron James branded Nike shoes in different styles, all customized for Akron Basketball.
Â
The Akron Zips men's basketball team currently has seven different Nike uniforms, including the traditional home and away (white and blue), the "Fear the Roo" uniform, the Team USA inspired "Gold Standard" and light grey uniforms, as well as pink cancer awareness uniforms and the "Unity" black and gold uniforms.
Â
"We are beyond excited to partner with Nike and LeBron James' brands once again," Akron head men's basketball coach John Groce said. "The partnership is a perfect fit because of our strong and long-standing relationships with Nike, LeBron James, and the LeBron James Family Foundation. We look forward to continuing to work together with them to impact our city, University and athletic department."
Â
"We are so fortunate to work with some incredible partners that make our I PROMISE movement what it is today, and we are thrilled to see two of those now coming together to do something even bigger," said Michele Campbell, executive director of the LeBron James Family Foundation. "In Nike, we have a longtime partner that supports our students and families and believes in the change we are trying to create. In The University of Akron, we have an incredible resource that has opened its doors and hearts to our kids and their families to change their lives through education. They are both amazing partners that live beyond themselves both in their commitment to the Akron community and care for our kids from Akron."
Â
Starting in the fall, all of the Akron Zips athletic programs will be outfitted in new home and away uniforms, travel gear, footwear, equipment, and other apparel that will be emblazoned with the Nike Swoosh and LeBron James brands.
Â
"It is a wonderful opportunity for The University of Akron to directly partner with such a remarkable brand," Williams said. "Now all Zips student-athletes will get to wear the LeBron James logo and align with the Nike family."
