AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips cheerleading squad earned runner-up in the Intermediate Small Coed Division IA Finals at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Collegiate National Championship on April 7-11 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Â
"Our coaches are so proud of the perseverance and determination of our cheering team this season," head cheer coach Tim Siwicki said. "Through this pandemic and school year, these student-athletes had to limit their interactions with others, focus on preparing for this competition, and maintain their grades. They performed a routine that they are so proud of and grew as a Zips family. We made it a season, A season we will always remember!"
Â
Akron competed virtually against Michigan and Kansas State while a handful of squads gathered in Daytona Beach to compete for the 2021 NCA National Championship in hopes of winning the title and taking home the coveted golden megaphone trophy.
Â
The Zips led the field after preliminary round, scoring 92.9 points with 0.25 in deductions for a 92.65 total score. Michigan followed with a 90.7667 total after 1.5-point reduction and Kansas State scored 85.95 total points with a 3.75-point reduction.
Â
In the finals, Akron posted 94.0333 points with no deductions, but the Wolverines edged the Zips with a 95.0-point routine for the Intermediate Small Coed Division IA title. Kansas State placed third overall with 92.333 total points.
Â
The Zips cheer team consisted of 19 student-athletes with only 20 practices to learn, perfect and perform the championship routine.
