AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball squad under the leadership of third-year head coach Melissa Jackson, has announced the addition of sophomore guard Annika Corcoran (Painesville, Ohio) to the roster for the 2021-22 campaign
A transfer from Detroit Mercy of the Horizon League, Corcoran will join a talented recruiting class donning the Akron uniform next season in Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville), Abby Carter (Geneva, Ohio/Eastlake North) and Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind./Bishop Chatard).
ANNIKA CORCORAN
A point guard from Painesville, Ohio, Corcoran was a four-year letterwinner at Gilmour Academy under legendary head coach Bob Beutel. A three-time All-State honoree, she averaged 17.9 points, 4.2 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game as a senior en route to garnering first-team All-State, Northeast Lakes District Player of the Year and North Coast League Offensive Player of the Year accolades. She helped spark her squad to a state title in Division II as a sophomore, as well as state runner-up honors as a junior and advancing to the Ohio Division II state semifinals as a freshman. A three-time Academic All-Ohio selection, she was tabbed a high school All-America honoree for Division II by the National Association of Private Schools as a junior. She established the school record for assists in a game (13), as well as the Division II state record for three pointers in a state semifinal game. A decorated athlete on the track, Corcoran is the state record holder in the long jump and twice captured district titles in the event en route to placing seventh in Ohio as a senior at the state track and field championships. As a freshman at Detroit, she averaged 6.1 points, 2.3 assists and 1.7 rebounds per game, while starting all 27 games in which she appeared. She was honored with the Coaches Award following the campaign as she led the Titans in assists (61). Additionally, she was named to the Dean's List and AD's Honor Roll at Detroit.
Jackson on Corcoran – "We are so excited to welcome Anni into our Zips' Family. Anni is a competitor and a leader, who is tough and has a great basketball mind. Anni is a true point guard and has the experience in a running a team. She has good vision, as well as the ability to space the floor and knock down shots. I have watched her play for many years, both in high school and college. Anni was always someone who impressed me, especially when we played them last year. She will immediately impact our program in a positive way, both on and off the court."
