Zips Fall in Ann Arbor to No.12 Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich.-Â The Akron women's basketball team dropped a 93-54 decision to the No. 12 Michigan Wolverines on Sunday afternoon at the Crisler Center.
Redshirt sophomore Layne Ferrell (Franklin, Ohio) led the Zips' offense with a team-high 13 points connecting on 5-of-11 from the floor. Senior Kendall Miller (Akron, Ohio) finished with seven points and two boards, while juniors Lonasia Brewer (Akron, Ohio) Molly Neitzel (Rocky River, Ohio) each added six points.
Freshman Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) and senior Colleen Neitzel (Rocky River, Ohio) paced Akron on the boards collecting four rebounds.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 14-0 lead to begin the game before Martindale connected on a free throw to get the Zips on board. Akron had plenty of good looks but had trouble getting baskets to fall as the Zips closed the opening quarter on 1-of-9 shooting (11.1%) and 0-of-6 from long range.
A three-pointer from Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa.) opened the Zips scoring effort in the second quarter with a three-pointer, followed by a jumper from Brewer. Michigan attacked with a 14-2 run that extended the Wolverines' lead to 41-11, but a jumper from Neitzel halted the run at the 4:28 mark of the second quarter. Akron closed out the second quarter shooting 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the floor, connecting on 6-of-8 layups that totaled 12 points in the paint.
The Wolverines led continued its double-figure lead in the second half, but Akron continued to play aggressive as the Zips put together a 6-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter on back-to-back threes from Emma Tecca (Tallmadge, Ohio) and Neitzel Akron connected on 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter.
Akron is scheduled to host Cleveland State on Sunday, Dec. 12 at James A. Rhodes Arena. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. after the Akron men's basketball team tips off against Florida A&M.
