Zips Earn 2020 USTFCCCA Team and Individual Academic Accolades

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron track and field team was rewarded for its efforts in the classroom as the Zips' men's and women's squads were tabbed by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as 2020 All-Academic Team recipients, the USTFCCCA unveiled on Thursday.

A total of 264 women's and 199 men's teams earned the distinction as a result of earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or higher. The Akron women's squad recorded a 3.522 cumulative GPA to be honored for the 18th consecutive campaign, while the men's team registered a 3.1 team GPA.

Individually, Akron earned eight selections to the 2020 All-Academic Individual List, including the Zips' women's squad which garnered five award winners.

"This will be an honor they will always cherish," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "It has been a tough year for athletic opportunity, and it was good to see them take advantage of their academic opportunities."Â

Earning All-Academic honors for the 2019 campaign from Akron were sophomores Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar) (3.468/Exercise Science) and Zoi Balamouti (Heraklion, Greece) (3.975/Exercise Physiology), senior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) (3.788/Sport Management), redshirt junior Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) (3.476/Civil Engineering), sophomore Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) (3.906/Nursing), redshirt junior Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) (3.773/Early Childhood Education) and seniors Dylan Hochbein (Sarver, Pa.) (3.682/Nursing) and Varvara Lissichkina (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) (4.0/Sport Science).

In all, a total of 659 women and 452 men earned USTFCCCA All-Academic individual honors for their combined academic and athletic accomplishments during the 2020 campaign.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:

• For the indoor season: must have finished the season ranked in the top 96 in any championship individual event, or in the top 48 in any championship relay event, for the most recent indoor season, certifiable by their place on the NCAA Division I descending order lists on TFRRS for Indoor Track and Field (including performances achieved outside the qualifying window during the indoor season).
