INDIANAPOLIS– Eight programs in the University of Akron Department of Athletics exceeded the national multi-year average in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) report for the 2018-19 academic year, the NCAA announced on Tuesday.
Â
Four UA programs– women's cross country, women's golf, women's swimming & diving, and women's tennis– each recorded a perfect multi-year score of 1,000.
Â
Zips' programs exceeding the national multi-year average of 983 included men's cross country (993), women's basketball (990), women's cross country (1,000), women's golf (1,000), co-ed rifle (996), women's swimming & diving (1,000), women's tennis (1,000), and women's volleyball (990).
Â
All 18 UA teams, including men's basketball (941) and football (945), posted averages above the NCAA's APR target score of 930. Additionally, nine programs maintained or improved their four-year APR score from last year's report.
Â
The report does not include UA's first-year programs of baseball and women's lacrosse.
The APR rating system is a real-time measure of eligibility, retention, and graduation of student-athletes. The most recent APRs are multi-year scores based on the last four reported academic years (2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19).
Â
In order to compete in the 2020-21 postseason, teams must achieve a 930 four-year APR. NCAA member representatives chose the 930 standard, because that score predicts a 50 percent graduation rate for the team. Additionally, teams must earn at least a 930 APR to avoid penalties.
