AKRON, Ohio– A total of 39 University of Akron student-athletes were inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society on Sunday evening during the live online broadcast of the UA Department of Athletics' annual Zippy Awards.
Â
Chi Alpha Sigma is a non-profit organization that was established to recognize college student-athletes who excel both on and off the field of competition.
Â
The organization was founded in 1996 by then DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis. His goal was to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime.
Â
Each Zip will receive a Chi Alpha Sigma pin and certificate of induction.
Â
To be eligible for Chi Alpha Sigma, student-athletes must attend a four-year accredited college or university that is a member of the NCAA or NAIA. The honoree also must achieve at least junior academic standing by the fifth semester or seventh quarter, as determined by the certifying institution, and must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of a 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale).
Â
Through the efforts of Akron former assistant volleyball coach Jordan Armstrong, Dr. Laura Richardson (Faculty Senate Athletics Committee/Sport Science & Wellness Education), Dr. Matthew Juravich (Faculty Athletics Representative/Sport Science & Wellness Education), and Anne Jorgensen (Senior Associate Athletics Director for Programming & Leadership), Akron applied for membership during the Spring of 2019 and inducted its first class of 76 honorees last spring.
