INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The NCAA has named the University of Akron the host for the 2023 NCAA Rifle Championships to be held on March 10-11, 2023, at James A. Rhodes Arena, the NCAA unveiled on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Â
The Zips will be hosting the NCAA Championship for the second time after debuting the event on the Akron campus during the 2016 campaign.
Â
"In 2016 we rocked the NCAA Collegiate Rifle world by designing, building and premiering the first-ever portable NCAA Championship rifle range," said Zips' head coach Newt Engle. "For the first-time ever, the only co-ed championship in the NCAA could be safely held in a large public venue. Since then, this portable range has been making the rounds to NCAA Rifle Championship locations across the nation. Now the range will be coming home with the announcement we will again host the NCAA Championships in 2023. I am so proud of what we started and now even prouder to do it again in 2023. Thank you to the NCAA and the University of Akron for allowing us to once again serve as host."
Â
This is the third time for this specific NCAA championship bid process, which created the largest host site announcement ever, spanning 86 championships across a four-year cycle. Previously, selection announcements varied by sport. This process now gives the NCAA and host sites more time to plan each championship experience.
Â
Bidding for 86 of 90 NCAA championships began in August 2019 and more than 3,000 bid applications were ultimately submitted. Each sport committee, per division, selected the host sites it believed would provide the ultimate experience for the respective student-athletes, resulting in more than 450 total championship event sites being awarded. More than 54,000 student-athletes compete in NCAA championships each year. The four championships not included in the process due to preexisting site arrangements are: Division I baseball, Division I football, Division I softball and Division III women's ice hockey.
Â
The NCAA Rifle Championships will feature eight teams as well as individuals from schools across the country.
Â
The competitive events for the NCAA men's and women's rifle championships will be individual smallbore rifle three-position (60 shots) and air rifle (60 shots), with finals in each event, team smallbore rifle three-position, and team air rifle. The individual and team events in smallbore will be conducted on Friday. The individual and team competition in air rifle will be conducted on Saturday. The overall team champion will be determined by combining the smallbore and air rifle team totals into one aggregate score for each institution.
