Mathison & Richardson Named Zips’ Student-Athletes of the Week

AKRON, Ohio – Football's Michael Mathison (Covington, Ga.) and volleyball's Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) have been tabbed the Zips' Summa Health Student-Athletes of the Week on September 17.
In the Mid-American Conference opener at Central Michigan, true freshman WR Mathison made his debut in the starting line-up. He made the most of his opportunity, finishing with five receptions for 36 yards. Mathison also returned five kickoffs for 152 yards, including a 45-yard return. He stands third in Zips' receiving with nine catches for 59 yards, while leading UA in kickoff returns with five for 152 yards. In the NCAA stats, Mathison is ranked No. 12 in kickoff returns (30.4) and No. 30 in combined kick returns (152).
Senior MB Richardson played stellar volleyball over the weekend at the Akron Invitational. Throughout three matches, she finished with 30 kills, compiling a .524 hitting percentage. She also added nine blocks on the defensive side. Her performance was highlighted by the Zips' match against Seton Hall, where she totaled 13 kills and 0 errors (.582) while adding 2.5 blocks. Named the MAC East Offensive Player of the Week, Richardson leads the Zips in kills (59), kills per set (2.36), hitting percentage (.360), blocks (26) and blocks per set (1.04).
Under first-year head coach Tom Arth, Akron football hosts Troy on Saturday, Sept. 21, at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
Volleyball, under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Tom Hanna, travels to North Dakota's Tournament on Sept. 20-21.
