Akron Women’s Tennis Team, Six Zips Named ITA Scholars

2019 ITA Academic Awards
TEMPE, Ariz. – For the seventh consecutive year, the University of Akron women's tennis team earned ITA All-Academic Team honors, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced this week.
To be eligible, teams must sport a combined cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better.
Additionally, six Zips were named 2019 ITA Scholar-Athletes– senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia), senior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico), redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany), freshman Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcias (Gaudalajara, Mexico), freshman Alexis Steer (Powell, Ohio), and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany).
Individuals must be varsity letterwinners with a 3.50 GPA for the current academic year and must be enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
Echeverry, a four-time ITA Scholar Athlete, Academic All-MAC, and Dean's List student, played primarily No. 5 singles. She went 13-12 in singles action. She played No. 3 doubles with various partners. Echeverry is studying mechanical engineering.
Flores, an Academic All-MAC and Dean's List student, went 5-2 in singles action during the spring, playing No. 5-6. She played No. 3 doubles with various partners. Flores is an interior design major.
Geier, a four-time ITA Scholar Athlete, Academic All-MAC, and Dean's List student, was the two-time MAC Player of the Year and a three-time team captain. She finished collegiate career ranked No. 2 on Akron's all-time list for singles wins (106) and combined wins (177) and No. 11 in doubles wins (71). Geier earned a bachelor's degree in sport management in 2018. She is pursuing an M.B.A.
Rosas, a true freshman, was the only freshman to see significant action. She went 11-8 in singles, playing mostly at No. 6. She played in every MAC regular-season and tournament match. Rosas is studying psychology.
Steer, a true freshman, is a Dean's List student. She saw significant action in the fall. Steer is studying biology.
Uljanov, a two-time ITA Scholar Athlete, earned second-team All-MAC honors. She finished singles action at 23-10 overall, including 19-5 in the spring, playing the No. 2-3 spots. She teamed with Geier at No. 2 doubles, going 16-7 overall. Uljanov is a sport studies major.
