AKRON, Ohio– The Akron women's tennis team and senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) are ranked in the final ITA Midwest Regional rankings, released this week.
Â
The Zips, which concluded the 2018-19 season with a 21-6 overall record and a second-place finish in the Mid-American Conference, are ranked at No. 9 in the region. Their 21 wins were the most of any MAC team.
Â
"I am exceptionally proud of this team for their outstanding season, which was rewarded by achieving a top ten regional ranking," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "The overall success of this team continues to show itself, and I could not be happier."
Â
In singles action, Geier is ranked No. 17 regionally.
Â
"Sophia had an unbelievable season, and this recognition continues to show just how well she played all year long," he said. "She probably deserves to be ranked a little higher, but to be ranked in such company by the other coaches in the Midwest Region is definitely an honor that she deserves."
Â
A three-time ITA Scholar Athlete and Dean's List student, Geier was a three-year team captain. She was named the MAC Player of the Year twice (2017, 2019). A 2019 first-team All-MAC, Geier was named to the 2019 MAC All-Tournament Team. She went undefeated against all MAC opponents at the No. 1 spot (7-0 in regular season and 2-0 in MAC tourney play). Geier went 29-4 in singles action, including 21-1 in spring action, all at No. 1. Named MAC Singles Player of the Week three times this spring, she paired with sophomore Anna Uljanov at No. 2 doubles where the duo went 16-7 overall. The pair earned MAC Doubles Team of the Week twice this spring. Geier finished collegiate career ranked No. 2 on Akron's all-time list for singles wins (106) and combined wins (177) and No. 11 in doubles wins (71). She named team's Most Valuable Player. Geier, who earned a bachelor's degree in sport management in 2018, is pursuing an M.B.A. and has a 3.940 GPA.
