Zips Set Sights on MAC Outdoor Track and Field Titles

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team will join the rest of its Mid-American Conference members this Thursday through Saturday, May 9-11, to compete at the league's Outdoor Championships, hosted by Ball State.
UP NEXT: In all, the championship meet will feature men's teams from Akron, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Miami University, while all 12 league members will be gunning for the title on the women's side.
The Zips' men squad will be looking to capture its eighth outdoor league championship, having won seven of the last 13 league titles overall.
On the women's side, the Zips are seeking back-to-back-to-back titles and their ninth overall outdoor championship after capturing the crown in 2017 and 2018.
In addition to a pair of MAC Championships on the line, the Zips will be competing against Kent State in the final standings for the final two points of the 2018-19 year in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge. Kent State leads 6.5-5.5 in the current standings.
Akron under the leadership of 24th-year head coach Dennis Mitchell figures to be in the running for team titles on both the men's and women's sides again this year.
MAC MEET SCHEDULE: The MAC Championships begins at 10 a.m. at the Briner Sports Complex in Muncie, Ind., on Thursday, May 9, with the start of the women's hammer, followed by the commencement of the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon at 11:30 a.m. and noon, respectively. The running events will begin at 4:45 p.m. with the preliminary round of the women's 1,500 meters and conclude with the men's 10,000 meters at 7 p.m.
The second day opens with the conclusion of the multi-events with the 110-meter hurdles in the men's decathlon and the long jump as part of the women's heptathlon at 11 a.m. and noon, respectively. Field events begins with the men's hammer at 11:00 a.m., while the preliminary round of the women's 100-meter hurdles opens running events at 4:45 p.m. The men's 3,000-meter steeplechase closes out the day's action at 7:45 p.m.
The final day of the championship kicks off with the men's discus at 11 a.m. The first running event is slated to begin at 1 p.m. with the women's 4x100 relay. Scoring in the meet will be on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for individual events and relays.
THIS WEEK IN AKRON TRACK AND FIELD WITH HEAD COACH DENNIS MITCHELL:
RETURNING ALL-MAC HONOREES: Senior Dara Perry (Akron, Ohio) leads a trio of returning champions for the Akron women's squad after capturing the women's 100-meter title title in 2018. The Zips also received a first-place performances a year ago from seniors Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) and Abigale Wilson (Carrollton, Ohio) in the women's pole vault and women's discus.
In the men's field, redshirt junior Ian Behm (Volant, Pa.), seniors Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio), Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio) and Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio) seek to defend their individual titles after winning the javelin, long jump, pole vault and high jump in 2018.
Looking to improve upon her second-place finishes in the men's decathlon and pole vault will be redshirt sophomore Malik Hudson (Cleveland, Ohio) and redshirt junior Cole Wigal (Belpre, Ohio).
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron men's track and field squad is ranked No. 35 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field National Rating Index released May 6.
The Zips' men's squad is rated sixth in the most-current Great Lakes Regional ratings, while the women's team checks in at No. 10.
The Zips are the top-rated Mid-American Conference team ranked in the men's and women's national polls.
In the Event Squad rankings released on May 6, Akron is ranked fourth nationally in the men's pole vault and among the top 20 in five different events.
Akron is also rated 10th in the men's long jump, 12th in the men's high jump, 15th in the women's 400-meter hurdles and 20th in the women's triple jump.
The Akron men's and women's teams are ranked No. 19 and No. 23, respectively, in the final Collegiate Outdoor Dual Meet Rankings as compiled by Jesse Squire for Track and Field News.
NCAA PREDICTIONS: A trio of University of Akron track and field standouts were among those projected by Track and Field News in its latest men's and women's championship tabulations to earn top-10 performances at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 5-8, in Austin, Texas.
Seniors Matt Ludwig and Jordan Latimer were tabbed to finish third and fourth, respectively, in the men's pole vault and men's long jump, while senior Lucy Bryan was projected to place sixth in the women's pole vault.
ZIPS AMONG NATION'S BEST IN LATEST TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has six student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) is this week's rankings, including senior Lucy Bryan, who is third in the nation in the women's pole vault (14-9/4.50m).
Also rated among the top-25 are seniors Jordan Latimer (sixth in the men's long jump - 26-3.75/8.02m), Matt Ludwig (sixth in the men's pole vault - 18-6.50/5.65m) and Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio) (12th in men's high jump - 7-2.50/2.20m), redshirt sophomore Hesham Eldesouky (16th in the men's triple jump - 52-5.75/15.98m) and redshirt junior Ian Behm (Volant, Pa.) (19th in men's javelin - 233-7/71.20m).

A WEEK AGO: The University of Akron track and field team turned in a strong weekend of performances as the Zips won 11 events as part of 32 overall top-three performances at the Campbell/Wright Invitational on May 4.
Matt Ludwig captured the men's pole vault eclipsing 18-1.75 (5.53m), while junior Matt Keim (Bolivar, Ohio) and Cole Wigal placed third and fourth with identical clearances of 16-2 (4.93m).
Curtis Richardson won the men's high jump with a mark of 6-11 (2.10m).
Lucy Bryan and redshirt sophomore Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) posted the top-two finishes in the women's pole vault eclipsing 13-6.50 (4.13m) and 13-2.50 (4.03m).
Redshirt junior Maike Anstett (Karlsruhe, Germany) registered a career-best mark of 5-7 (1.70m) to win the women's high jump, while freshman Carlyn Zahner (North East, Pa.) placed second with a jump of 5-1.75 (1.57m).
Redshirt sophomore Marc Migliozzi Pittsburgh, Pa.) ran a career-best time of 3:53.47 to capture the men's 1,500 meters, while sophomore Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio) and redshirt junior Jeremiah Fitzgerald (Mantua, Ohio) crossed the line in 3:58.01 and 4:00.92 to place second and third.
Abigale Wilson won the women's discus with a season-best mark of 178-4 (54.37m), while finishing second in the women's shot put with a season-long mark of 51-5 (15.67m).
Olivia Snyder placed third in the women's shot put with a mark of 49-1 (14.96m), while registering a career-best mark of 152-10 (46.58m) to finish fourth in the women's discus.
Freshman Sam Janson (Dayton, Ohio) registered a victory in the men's 200 meters in a time of 22.61, while also recording a second-place performance in the men's 400 meters in a career-best time of 48.46.
Freshman Zach Robinson (Pickerington, Ohio) followed Janson across the line in the men's 200 meters for a second-place effort with a time of 22.90.
The Zips finished first, second, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men's 100 meters as freshmen Demetrius Jackson (Beachwood, Ohio) and Malcom Briley (Pickerington, Ohio), sophomore Tyler Grine (Fremont, Ohio) and junior Marcques Gibbs (Darby, Ohio) recorded times 10.74, 10.84, 11.18 and 11.31.
Sophomores Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio) and Leah Recker (Findlay, Ohio) each ran career-best times of 4:34.13 and 4:39.46 to finish first and second, respectively, in the women's 1,500 meters.
Freshman Victoria Abunaw (Maumee, Ohio) won the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.93.
Freshman Bobby Casey (Mayfield, Ohio) earned a second-place showing in the men's long jump with a mark of 22-7 (6.88m), while redshirt sophomore Nate Smith (Smithville, Ohio) was third in the men's triple jump with a career-best mark of 44-0 (13.41m).
Freshman Sydney Niekamp (Napoleon, Ohio) finished second in the women's 3,000 meters with a career-best time of 11:05.36.
Redshirt sophomores Patrick Kimball (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Elijah Johnson (Fremont, Ohio) posted times of 14.67 and 14.86 to earn second- and third-place finishes in the men's 110-meter hurdles.
Ian Behm captured the men's javelin with a mark of 204-2 (62.23m), while Casey finished third in the men's javelin with a mark of 176-3 (53.73m).
Freshman Laurel Bristow (Pittsburgh, Pa.) garnered a second-place performance in the women's javelin on the strength of a throw of 140-1 (42.70m).
Redshirt junior Shawnn Foster (Cheektowa, N.Y.) and Snyder posted marks of 163-10 (49.95m) and 163-4 (49.79m) to earn second- and third-place efforts in the women's hammer.
A YEAR AGO: The University of Akron women's track and field team captured its second consecutive and eighth Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field title, while five different Zips earned league titles to headline the final day of the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 12, 2018 in Amherst, N.Y.
On the women's side, the Zips garnered back-to-back titles and their eighth overall outdoor championship besting the field with 136.5 points. Akron outpaced second place Eastern Michigan (122), while Toledo (74), Central Michigan (69) and Kent State (67) rounded out the top-five team finishers.
In the men's race, the Zips placed second with 166 points, falling 18.5 points shy of edging Eastern Michigan for the team title. The Eagles won the field with 184.5 points, followed by Akron, Kent State (153), Central Michigan (115), Miami (111) and Buffalo (80.5).
For his team's efforts, Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell was named the Women's Coach of the Year. Additionally, Jordan Latimer was awarded the Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet after winning the men's long jump.
On the strength of a career-best time 11.51, Daziah Green earned her first-ever MAC title winning the women's 100 meters. She followed capturing the women's 200 meters with a winning time of 23.54.
Earning his third consecutive and third overall career MAC title in the men's high jump was Curtis Richardson with a winning jump of 6-11.50 (2.12m).
Claiming her third career MAC title and second in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a school and meet-record time of 13.10 was Dara Perry.
Abigale Wilson won her second career title in the women's discus registering a winning mark of 176-0 (53.64m).
Mackenzie Andrews placed third in the women's 1,500 meters posting a time of 4:21.40, while finishing fourth in the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:09.93.
A trio of league titles from Jackie Siefring, Latimer and Lucy Bryan directed the efforts of the University of Akron track and field team on the second day of the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 11, 2018.
Siefring and Patricia Ortega claimed the top-two performances in the women's heptathlon on the strength of strong second-day performances. Seifring earned her eighth career league title recording a meet-record score of 5,688, while Ortega earned second-team All-MAC accolades for the second time posting a seven-event cumulative score of 5,285.
Sparked by a then career-long mark of 26-0.75 (7.94m), Latimer earned his fourth career league title in the men's long jump.
Garnering a winning mark of 14-2 (4.32m) in the women's pole vault to capture her first-ever MAC title was Bryan. In the process, Bryan bettered the previous league meet record of 14-1.75 (4.31m) set by former Zip All-American Annika Roloff in 2014.
Picking up valuable team points in the men's decathlon with second-, third- and fourth-place performances was Malik Hudson, Brandon Hochbein and Kamar Majid. Hudson and Hochbein registered career-high marks of 6,723 and 6.576, respectively, while Majid added a 10-event cumulative score of 6,444.
Unleashing a career-best throw of 52-6 (16.00m), the second-best mark in outdoor program history, to place second in the women's shot put was Wilson.
On the opening day of the championships, Matt Ludwig and Ian Behm captured titles in the men's pole vault and javelin.
Ludwig won his fourth career title in the men's pole vault and 22nd straight championship triumph for the Zips in the event surpassing 18-0.50 (5.50m).
Behm claimed his first-ever MAC title in the men's javelin when his sixth and final attempted landed at 228-9 (69.73m).
