AKRON, Ohio – Women's tennis coach Brandon Padgett announced on Friday that Jemileth Aguilar (Weston, Fla.) will transfer to the University of Akron to continue her education and playing career in the fall.
Aguilar just completed two seasons at Florida Atlantic. She will be eligible to play immediately for the Zips.
Aguilar, who goes by the nickname Jemi, plans to study sport management. She would like to go to law school.
"I couldn't be more excited to have Jemi join our team," Padgett said. "I recruited her out of high school, but for various reasons, she stayed in the state of Florida, which I certainly understood. Now I finally have the opportunity to coach her, and I couldn't be happier about it. Jemi will bring exceptional doubles skills to our team, which is what we're looking for, and she will provide much needed experience on the singles court as well."
As a sophomore in 2019, Aguilar played No. 1 doubles for the Owls. As a true freshman in 2017-18, she earned first-team All-Conference USA honors in doubles. Paired with Aliona Bolsova, the duo went 12-2, including 9-2 at No. 1, and was ranked No. 55 in the ITA rankings.
As a senior, Aguilar was a member of the 2016 state championship team at Cypress Bay High School.
"'We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.' (Proverbs 16:9) During this past semester, this verse has been true to my heart," Aguilar said. "I lost track of my passion, but I still felt as though it would all come together in the end, even though I didn't know exactly how. When the opportunity to play for Akron came to me, it showed me that my journey with tennis wasn't over, and I am excited for the new opportunities!"
Aguilar joins incoming freshman Tanja Derowski (Bruckmuehl, Germany) who committed to Akron in December.
Akron finished the 2019 season at 21-6 overall and second in the Mid-American Conference at 5-2. The Zips went a perfect 8-0 at home this season.
