Akron Women’s Tennis Upsets Defending MAC Champion Buffalo, 6-1

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University of Akron women's tennis team upset defending MAC champion Buffalo, 6-1, in Mid-American Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Miller Tennis Center.

The Zips (19-5 overall, 4-2 MAC) started out strong against the Bulls (14-6 overall, 3-3 MAC), taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2.

At No. 1 for the Zips, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Chantel Martinez Blanco and Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou, 6-3.

At No. 2, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) beat Arianna Paules Aldrey and Pia Schwarz, 6-3.

"Outstanding focus and effort today from start to finish," said ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett. "We came out in doubles and played with a passion that we haven't seen during MAC play, and that passion continued throughout singles, and it proved to be the difference. We knew we needed to play well, and we did!"

Akron recorded victories in five singles matches.

At. No. 1, Geier registered the 103rd victory of her collegiate career with a 6-0, 6-0 shut out of Blanco. The Zips' leader is 26-4 overall, 18-1 this spring, and a perfect 6-0 in MAC play.

At No. 2, Vasilescu beat Antoniou-Karademitrou in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. She is 21-9 overall, 18-4 this spring, and 5-1 in MAC play.

At No. 3, Uljanov battled Schwarz to a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (2) victory. She is 20-10 overall, 16-5 this spring, and 5-1 in MAC play.

At No. 4, Pedroso beat Hsin-Yuan Shih, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. She is 21-10 overall, 15-6 this spring, and 5-1 in MAC play.

At No. 6, freshman Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) defeated Sanjana Sudhir in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Akron closes out regular-season MAC road play at Ball State on Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m.
