Akron’s Vasilescu Earns MAC Singles Honor

CLEVELAND – University of Akron sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) earned Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week honors, the MAC announced on Wednesday.
The MAC honor is the second for Vasilescu this season and the fourth of her career. She was also recognized on Feb. 27.
Last week, Vasilescu went 3-0 at the No. 2 position in singles play, helping Akron to three team wins and a 2-0 start in MAC play.
At Youngstown State, Vasilescu defeated Tamara Teufl in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2/. In the win over Miami (Ohio), she beat Milana Lysova, 6-1, 6-4. In the victory over Bowling Green, Vasilescu defeated Paula Comella, 6-3, 6-1.
"I'm extremely proud of Miruna's performance last week, but I'm more proud of the growth she has shown as this season has progressed," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "She is improving in all aspects of her game, which is amazing to watch."
Overall, Vasilescu stands 18-8 in singles action, 15-3 in spring action, and 2-0 in MAC play.
This is the eighth MAC honor for Akron this spring. Redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany was named Singles Player of the Week on Feb. 6, Feb. 13, and Feb. 20. Junior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and Vasilescu earned Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 30 and Feb. 20, while Geier and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) were the Doubles Team on Feb. 6.
The Zips (17-3 overall, 2-0 MAC) travel to Toledo (9-6 overall, 1-1 MAC) on Saturday, March 30, for a 1 p.m. match at the UT Varsity Courts. Weather permitting, all matches will be televised on ESPN3.
