February 05 | General
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron Department of Athletics has named orthopaedic surgeon Ryan Urchek, MD, of the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center as a team physician.
He replaces retired Crystal Clinic physician Tim Myer, MD, and joins colleague Raymond Acus, MD, in supporting Zips' athletics.
"We'd like to welcome the impressively trained and highly regarded Dr. Urchek to the Zips' Athletics family," said Larry Williams, Akron Director of Athletics. "He has big shoes to fill. We'd also like to thank Dr. Myer for his many years of service. We rely on the doctors from Crystal Clinic for their outstanding care in servicing the health and welfare of our student-athletes on a daily basis."
Prior to joining Crystal Clinic, Urchek served as a team physician for the Atlanta Falcons as well as Georgia Tech's football and men's basketball teams.
Urchek is a board-eligible, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in ankle, knee, and shoulder arthroscopic procedures such as ACL reconstruction, revision ACL surgery, cartilage restoration, rotator cuff repair, labral repair, and meniscal surgery. An Ohio native, he graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic residency at Summa Health and his orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta.
Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center sponsors the 14-sport rival series between Akron and Kent State. The next event in the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Challenge is Friday, Feb. 8, as the schools' men's basketball teams take the court at 9 p.m. at James A. Rhodes Arena. ESPNU will televise the game nationally. Currently, Akron leads Kent State, 3.0 to 2.5, in the 2018-19 challenge.
