Akron Rifle Tops Ohio State in NCAA Qualifier Match, 4,663-4,644

RESULTS | GARC CHAMPIONSHIPS SCHEDULE
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 13-ranked University of Akron rifle team defeated Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 16, in its NCAA qualifier match at Hugh W. Wiley Range in Columbus, Ohio.
The Zips topped OSU 4,663-4,644. Each team's score from the qualifier match is added to their top three scores of the season. The top eight programs receive an invitation to the NCAA Championships. Despite Akron's record breaking season and edging Ohio State in the qualifier match, the Zips finished in 13th overall and will not be advancing to the championships.
In air rifle competition, sophomore Wyatt Openshaw (Parkton, Md.) led the Zips and finished second overall with a personal best mark of 592.
Freshman Andre Gross (Webster, N.Y.) held a team best smallbore score of 585, while also finishing first overall. Openshaw was second in smallbore with a score of 580.
Akron still awaits the possibility of receiving individual invitations to the NCAA Championships. The selections will be announced on NCAA.com at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
This Zips now will prepare to host the Great America Rifle Championships in Stile Athletics Field House. Smallbore competition will take place, Friday, Feb. 22, and air rifle on Saturday, Feb. 23.
