AKRON, Ohio – The Akron women's basketball team is back in the win column as the Zips defeated North Carolina A&T, 64-52, inside James A. Rhodes Arena in the final home contest of the 2019-20 non-conference schedule behind the strength of season-best 22 points from senior captain Haliegh Reinoehl (Westfield, Ind.) on Monday night.Â

Akron's win against the Aggies snapped a three-game losing skid for the Zips heading into the final two contests of the non-conference slate and 2019, while the victory also halted NC A&T's win streak at four games.Â

Reinoehl scored a game-high 22 points in the match-up, which fell on point short of her career-high. The senior forward also turned in eight rebounds, two steals, and two blocked shots. Behind Reinoehl scoring in double figures was junior Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W. Va.) and senior Shayna Harmon (Ashville, Ohio) who notched a combined 26 points. Dawson posted 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals, while Harmon recorded 12 points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal.Â

The Zips shot 34.3-percent from the floor (24-for-70) which included a game-high 46.7-percent from the floor and 4-for-7 from beyond the arc in the first quarter. The Zips eight triples played a large role in the game contributing 24 of the Zips points with an additional 32 points coming in the paint.Â

Akron came out of the gates sluggish and fell behind eight points the first quarter with 1:48 left to play. In the closing minutes of the period, Akron went on a 7-0 run to cut its deficit to two points heading into the second quarter. Reinoehl scored seven points in the first period and the Zips connected on four triples.Â

The offensive momentum for the Zips carried over into the second period as UA went on a 9-2 run in the first four minutes of the second to grow its scoring outburst to a 16-2 advantage in favor of the Akron since the 1:30 mark of the first quarter.Â

At the halftime break, UA led by just three points as the Aggies outscored the Zips 7-5 to close out the quarter and bring the contest back within a manageable margin.Â

Following the first 20 minutes of play, Akron sunk six three-pointers, forced 10 Aggie turnovers, scored nine points off turnovers, and tallied 12 points in the paint.Â

Akron's defense was the story of the third quarter as UA held NC A&T to just six points in the period. The six points Akron limited the Aggies to in the quarter is the second time in 2019-20 the Zips defense has held an opponent to six points.Â

While the Aggies struggled to find the bottom of the net, Akron began to pull away with the contest posting 19 points, went on an 11-3 run, and grew its lead to 52-37 heading into the fourth. A game-high six different Akron players scored in the period including six points from Dawson, four points courtesy of Reinoehl, and three points each for Harmon and freshman Lonasia Brewer.Â

Despite the Aggies outscoring the Zips 15-12 in the fourth quarter, Akron's lead was far too much for NC A&T to overcome and has the final buzzer sounded, the Zips walked away with the win.Â

Akron now travels to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to take part in the 2019 Puerto Rico Clasico to close out 2019 and the non-conference schedule. The Zips are scheduled to take on Denver on Friday, Dec. 20 before a match-up with Morgan State awaits UA on Saturday, Dec. 21. Both games are slated to begin at Noon and can be heard live on 1350 AM Fox Sports with Bill Morgan on the call.Â
