Women’s Tennis Wins Twice on Day 1 of Akron Shootout

CLEVELAND – The University of Akron women's tennis team picked up two wins on the first day of competition at its own Akron Shootout on Friday at Cleveland State's Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
In the tourney's opening match, the Zips beat Binghamton in singles action, 5-1. At No. 1, junior Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) beat Samara Eisenberg in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 2, sophomore Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Guadalajara, Mexico) defeated Michelle Eisenberg, 6-2, 6-4.
At No. 3, senior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) beat out Regina Furer, 6-2, 7-5.
At No. 4, freshman Tanja Derowski (Bruckmuehl, Germany) defeated Jamie Lau, 6-4, 7-5.
At No. 6, sophomore Enya Forgaci (Boca Raton, Fla.) beat Liana Weitzman, 6-1, 6-4.
In afternoon doubles action, Akron beat Youngstown State, 2-1.
At No. 1, Vasilescu and Pedroso defeated Imaan Hassim and Tamara Teufl, 6-3.
At No. 2, Rosas and Derowski beat Lucia Zagar and Elvira Esteo, 6-1.
Action at the Akron Shootout continues on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 10 a.m. Participating this fall are Binghamton, Cleveland State, Youngstown State, and host Akron. The complete schedule is listed below. All matches will be played at Cleveland State's Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
