Women’s Tennis Picks up Singles & Doubles Wins on Final Day of Shootout

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team closed its own Akron Shootout on Sunday with two wins.
The Zips shut out Youngstown State in doubles action, 3-0, and claimed a 4-2 victory over Cleveland State in singles action.
Redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and Louisville's Nikolina Jovic were the tourney's winners in singles play with identical records in each flight. Louisville's Jovic and Sena Suswam won the doubles competition.
Against the Penguins, sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) and junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) battled Imaan Hassim and Anastasia Khokhlova for a 7-6 (5) win at No. 1. At No. 2 doubles, Geier and freshman Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.) defeated Tamara Teufl and Cassandra Moraleja, 6-1. At No. 3, senior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) and freshman Ceci Rosas (Gaudalajara, Mexico) beat out YSU's Lucia Zagar and CSU's Blanche Leoan, 6-4.
Against the Vikings, Geier beat Isabella Spindler in straight sets at No. 1, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Rosas defeated Siån Payne, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3, Uljanov claimed a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Klara Mrcela. At No. 4, Pedroso defeated Lara Prosenjak, 6-1, 6-3.
"The weekend went well," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "We got better every day. Today, we played really well in singles and doubles. Overall, it was a great first weekend of competition to kick off the fall for us."
Akron travels to the Detroit Mercy Invitational on Sept. 28-29. Pairings and times will be announced later this week.
