Vasilescu Drops Singles Match at Oracle/ITA Masters

MALIBU, Calif. – University of Akron sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) dropped her opening round match at the 2018 Oracle/ITA Masters on Thursday at Pepperdine University.

Seeded No. 27, Vasilescu fell to No. 6 seed Evgeniya Levashova of Pepperdine, 6-2, 6-1.

"Today was a difficult day for Miruna," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Getting used to being back on a hard court, and making the change to a brand new racquet and strings has unfortunately impacted her confidence. She played an extremely difficult opponent today, and she had chances in most of the games played, but just wasn't able to consistently finish the games. She will learn and grow from this experience, and hopefully tomorrow things will be better for her."

Vasilescu will continue singles play at the 2018 Oracle/ITA Masters on Friday, Sept. 21, in the double elimination tournament. Her opponent and match time will be announced tonight.

Live scoring will be available through the Oracle ITA Masters website. Sunday's finals will be televised/streamed by ESPNU and ESPNWatch at 2:30 p.m. ET (11:39 a.m. PT).

The Zips open the 2018 fall season with their own Akron Shootout on Sept. 21-23 with Cleveland State, Louisville, and Youngstown State at the outdoor tennis courts on campus.
