PHILADELPHIA – University of Akron junior CB Alvin Davis, Jr. (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) has been named the Chuck Bednarik National Defensive Player of the Week, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Tuesday.
"We are extremely proud that Alvin Davis has received this award," head coach Terry Bowden said. "He is one of our most valuable players on the team. Not only is he one of our leading tacklers, but he already has three interceptions for the season. Having two touchdown returns in one game is truly phenomenal."
The junior had a big night in Akron's stunning 39-34 victory at Northwestern on Saturday. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the second half, propelling UA to the come-from-behind road victory. The win was Akron's first win over a Big Ten team since 1894 (Ohio State) and second win all-time.
He returned the first interception 97 yards for a touchdown to bring the Zips within two, 21-19, in the third quarter. Davis' 97-yard interception ties for second-best in program history.
In the fourth quarter, Davis had another interception with a 50-yard return for a touchdown. It was the first multi-interception and multi-touchdown game of his collegiate career. That touchdown put Akron ahead by 11 points, 39-28, with 7:24 left to play.
Davis finished the game with 10 tackles, two interceptions for 147 return yards, and two touchdowns.
After two games, Davis is tied for third with 13 tackles. He has a team-best three interceptions for 149 return yards, two touchdowns, a forced fumble, and a break-up. Davis was named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for the East Division on Monday.
Akron (2-0 overall) travels to Iowa State (0-2 overall) on Saturday, Sept. 22, for a Noon ET game on FSN.
Season ticket plans—which include a ticket to all home games as well as a parking pass— start at only $60 each. As a season ticket holder, fans have the ability to purchase tickets for road games at Northwestern and Iowa State.
