2018 ITA Academic Awards
TEMPE, Ariz. – For the sixth consecutive year, the University of Akron women's tennis team earned ITA All-Academic Team honors, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced this week.
Across all five divisions collegiate tennis (men's and women's), 735 teams, including 193 Division I women's teams, and 4,328 individuals earned recognition for the 2017-18 academic year.
Additionally, four Zips were named 2018 ITA Scholar-Athletes– junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia), sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal), freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany), and freshman Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.).
"I am extremely proud of this team, as they continue to show that receiving a top-quality education is the driving force behind what we do," Akron head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Receiving the ITA All-Academic Team Award, once again, is a testament to the hard work of the entire team. Individually, we had several standout academic performances this past year, and I want to congratulate and thank those individuals. Luisa and Rita continue to lead by example in this area (as does Sophia, who's grades were not allowed to be factored into the award because she was redshirted), while Anna and Madison stepped up as freshmen and performed exceptionally in the classroom for us."
Echeverry, a three-time ITA Scholar Athlete, Academic All-MAC and Dean's List student, played primarily No. 4/5 singles. She finished 20-13 overall, including 6-3 in fall action and 14-10 this spring. Echeverry was the only Zip to register 20 wins on the season, including a perfect 2-0 at No. 2 singles. She went 17-15 in doubles and 13-9 in doubles in the spring. Echeverry has a 3.624 GPA in mechanical engineering.
Pedroso, a two-time ITA Scholar Athlete, Academic All-MAC, and Dean's List student, played No. 1-2 singles. She participated in the ITA Midwest Championships and won her qualifying round match. Pedroso played No. 1 doubles with freshman partner Anna Uljanov. The duo earned MAC Doubles Team of the Week honors (March 7) after winning two home matches and helping the Zips win the doubles point twice. Pedroso has 3.900 in international business.
Uljanov, a true freshman, earned second-team All-MAC honors and was named the team's Most Improved Player. She opened her collegiate career with perfect 3-0 mark in singles play.
