AKRON, Ohio– Nine programs in the University of Akron Department of Athletics exceeded the national multi-year average in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) report for the 2016-17 academic year, the NCAA announced on Wednesday.
Â
Women's cross country and women's tennis each recorded a perfect score of 1,000.
Â
Zips' programs exceeding the national multi-year average of 981 include men's cross country (986), women's cross country (1,000), men's golf (986), women's basketball (987), women's golf (990), women's swimming (991), women's tennis (1,000), women's track (981), and women's volleyball (995).
Â
All 17 UA teams, including men's basketball (950) and football (941), posted averages above the NCAA's APR target score of 930. Additionally, 10 programs maintained or improved their four-year APR score from last year's report.
The APR rating system is a real-time measure of eligibility, retention, and graduation of student-athletes. The most recent APRs are multi-year scores based on the last four reported academic years (2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, and 2016-17).
Â
In order to compete in the 2018-19 postseason, teams must achieve a 930 four-year APR. NCAA member representatives chose the 930 standard, because that score predicts a 50 percent graduation rate for the team. Additionally, teams must earn at least a 930 APR to avoid penalties.
