DeKALB, Ill. – The University of Akron women's tennis team won its third Mid-American Conference match on Saturday evening with a 6-1 victory at Northern Illinois (5-15 overall, 0-6 MAC) at the Boylan Tennis Center.

"Good team effort and win today," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "Every player stepped up on each court, in singles and doubles, and we played at a higher level than we have recently. NIU played hard, as they always do, but we did a great job of matching their intensity from start to finish."

The Zips (14-10 overall, 3-3 MAC) claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots.

At No. 2, senior captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Maria Potsi and Lara Slisko, 6-4.

At No. 3 doubles, junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and senior Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) beat Abigail Dekkinga and Brodie Walker, 6-4.

In singles action, Vasilescu earned her second consecutive MAC win at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Thisuri Molligoda.

At No. 3, Knezevich defeated Dekkinga in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.

At No. 4, freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) battled Walker, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

At No, 5. Echeverry defeated Evelyn Youel, 6-1, 7-5.

At No. 6, junior Carla Flores (Caohuila, Mexico) improved to 8-2 singles this spring with a 6-4, 6-3victory over Lara Slisko.

Akron returns home to host Buffalo on Saturday, April 14, at 1 p.m. Weather will determine which courts—UA outdoor courts or the LaTuchie Tennis Center– will be utilized.
