Ortega Leads Heptathlon after Day One of Bryan Clay Invitational

AZUSA, Calif. – The University of Akron senior Patricia Ortega (Logrono, Spain) maintains a 36-point advantage in the women's heptathlon with a four-event cumulative score of 3.495 after the opening day of the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif., on Wednesday, April 18.
Ortega leads all competitors in flight three, while fellow senior Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) sits in fifth with a score of 3,390 in the fourth flight of the women's heptathlon.
"It was a really good first day," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "It was probably the best first day in the heptathlon in program history by Patricia (Ortega), while Jackie (Siefring) is ahead of her pace after day one a year ago."
Ortega opened her competition placing third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.66 before registering a career-best mark of 5-10 (1.78m) to place fourth in the high jump.
Ortega added a throw of 36-11 (11.25m) in the shot put before closing her day running a career-best time of 24.82 in the 200 meters.
Siefring posted a time of 14.12 in the 100-meter hurdles to place fifth before equaling a career-best jump of 5-6.50 (1.69m) in the high jump.
In the shot put Siefring recorded a mark of 40-5 (12.32m) before crossing the line in 24.80 in the 200 meters.
A rolling schedule for final-day efforts begins in groups at 12, 1, 2 and 3:30 p.m. ET. on Thursday, April 19.
