AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field team will have a busy week as the Zips are set to compete in a quartet of meets across California this weekend as well as heading downstate for the Jesse Owens Classic hosted by Ohio State.
Akron seniors Patricia Ortega (Logrono, Spain) and Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) will commence competition for the Zips competing in the women's heptathlon at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif., on Wednesday and Thursday, April 18-19.
The two-day event will kick off on Wednesday, April 18, with a pair of groups in the 100-meter hurdles at 12:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET. A rolling schedule for final-day efforts begins in groups at 12, 1, 2 and 3:30 p.m. ET.
The Zips then will split their efforts between the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (April 19) and Beach Invitational (April 20-21) hosted by Long Beach State and the Mt. Sac Relays (April 19-21) hosted by Mt. San Antonio College in Torrance, Calif.
The running of the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays, which is in its 60th year, opens with the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 8:30 p.m. ET on Thursday. Competition resumes on Friday with the women's 1,500 meters at 1:30 p.m. ET before concluding on Saturday with the men's 4x400 invitational relay at 8 p.m. ET.
The men's high jump at 1 p.m. ET will start the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Thursday with the final event being the men's 4x400 relay at 8:55 p.m. ET.
The Beach Invitational begins on Friday with the men's high jump at 2 p.m. ET before the meet concludes opening-day action with the men's javelin at 6:45 p.m. ET. The final day of the competitions opens with the men's high jump at 12 p.m. ET before action on the track rounds out with the men's 4x400 relay at 9:27 p.m. ET.
Akron's distances runners and select field competitors will compete at the Jesse Owens Classic on Friday and Saturday. The women's hammer kicks off competition at 2 p.m. before the women's 5,000 meters hits the track at 6:30 p.m. Final-day action starts with the women's shot put at 10:30 a.m. before the day is capped by the men's 4x400 relay at 5 p.m.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron women's and men's track and field teams are ranked 47th and 58th, respectively, in the 2018 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Team Computer Rankings released on April 16.
The Zips are the highest-rated team in the Mid-American Conference in both polls.
ZIPS AMONG NATION'S BEST IN LATEST TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron currently has eight student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS), including junior Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio), who owns the No. 4 mark nationally in the men's pole vault (18-4.50/5.60m).
Also rated among the top-25 is junior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) (fifth in women's pole vault – 14-3.25/4.35m), freshman Jenna Frantz (Versailles, Ohio) (10th in women's pole vault – 13-11.25/4.25m), redshirt junior Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) (12th in the men's long jump – 25-8.25/7.83m), senior Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio) (12th in the men's long jump – 25-8.25/7.83m ), redshirt sophomore Ian Behm (Volant, Pa.) (13th in the men's javelin – 231-7/70.59m), junior Dara Perry (Akron, Ohio) (16th in women's 100-meter hurdles – 13.11) and junior Eboni Hall (Pickerington, Ohio) (17th in women's pole vault – 13-8.50/4.18m).
A YEAR AGO: Jackie Siefring established a new career-best heptathlon score with a seven-event cumulative score of 5,750 at the Mt. Sac Relays/California Invitational Combined Events on April 13, 2017, en route to earning a third-place finish.
Siefring opened her day recording a jump of 19-5.50 (5.93m) in the long jump before turning in a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a career-best throw of 130-10 (39.87m).
She closed her efforts in the heptathlon registering a winning time of 2:14.62 in the 800 meters, narrowly missing bettering her career-best mark of 2:14.57 set at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
On the same weekend a season ago, the Zips competed at the LSU Alumni Invitational in Baton Rouge, La., and the Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State, while its throwers took part at the Triton Invitational hosted by San Diego.
The women's 4x400 relay squad of senior Daziah Green (Canton, Ohio), Jackie Siefring, sophomore Dimitra Gnafaki (Chania, Greece) and Kiara Chatman garnered a school-record time of 3:39.34 to highlight the Zips' performances at the LSU Alumni Invitational on April 22, 2017.
Weronika Gaudyn placed fourth in the women's triple jump invitational registering the second-best mark, 42-2.75 (12.87m), in program history.
Miles Baldwin recorded the second-fastest time in the men's 400 meters in program history crossing the line in 46.72 to finish ninth.
Junior Cody Stine (Shelby, Ohio) won the men's high jump equaling the No. 3 mark, 7-1.50 (2.17m) in program history.
Matt Ludwig won the men's pole vault with a jump of 17-7.25 (5.37m).
Akron turned in six top-10 performances to close out the Zips' efforts at the Jesse Owens Classic hosted by Ohio State on April 22, 2017.
Sean Poholski posted Akron's top finish placing fourth in the 800 meters with a career-best time of 1:50.89, while earning a fifth-place showing in the women's long jump with a mark of 18-11.75 (5.79m) was Ana Martin-Sacristan.
Phil Jagers finished sixth with a mark of 195-8.75 (59.66m) in a star-studded field in the men's discus invitational to headline the Zips' performances at the Triton Invitational.
Jagers competed in a field that included three throwers ranked in the top-60 in the world in 2017 and was the top collegiate finisher in the event.
Senior Maurice Harris (Toledo, Ohio) placed fourth in the men's discus (179-0/54.57m) and fifth in the men's shot put with a throw of 52-7 (16.03m).
Junior Olivia Snyder (Navarre, Ohio) rounded out the Zips' efforts placing eighth in the women's shot put with a throw of 41-3.25 (12.58m), while junior Abigale Wilson (Carrollton, Ohio) finished fourth a day earlier in the women's discus with a mark of 158-0.75 (48.18m).
